MP4 Rewind/Fast Forward not working on client device

Well, I've just raced down the rabbit hole of ReadyNAS and am trying hard to get up to speed with everything.

I've an RNDU400 Ultra 4 which I'm using as a home data and multi media storage platform. I'm presently getting rid of all my DVD's and storing digital copies on the NAS so that my 2 year old wont continue to scratch and destroy them.

A few queries:

1) Having just installed a few files on the NAS. I note that when playing the movie files (mp4 format) from my Sony Bluray DVD interface (Ethernet connection through a hub to the NAS) I can view the file, play, pause and stop it, but I can't fast forward or rewind it. If however, I play the file from a separate WD HD it works fine. Just trying to understand why when streamed from the Ultra 4 this functionality is removed? Has anyone come across this before?

2) Being a complete Newbie to this. What would you suggest the best way to store and transmit media information from my ReadyNAS Ultra 4? I looked into Plex but my device seems well under specked for it. Any suggestions... Its a bit daunting without a real reference to start. I'm using PC & Android devices.

Thanks in advance.

    2) Plex would be fine if your media is in the format that you can direct play on your client or if it is very close to such a format. If your media is not in a format your client can play directly then that's going to be an issue however you want to stream it from your Ultra 4.
  • Thanks for your speedy reply mdgm. In that case I'll look into plex, as I'm trying hard to get the data in a format that wont need transcoding.

Thus my query for 1) I thought I had the format I liked. Quality and sound was good. Just can't navigate which is kind of weird. AVI's work fine, its just MP4's and M4v's that are giving me grief at the moment.
  • Just an update... After trialling several different options - have come to the conclusion that the Sony DVD player has issues with the trans coding coming from the ReadyNAS, as a result it doesn't allow the fast forward or rewinding capability. Am now looking for a more user friendly device to deal with the streaming to our TV. Any ideas? I see Roku's are popular. Or maybe I'll just upgrade the TV to a plex friendly one, and bypass the intermediary. Cheers!
  • Hello
Dune HD Smart units are outstanding. I tried several network media players for video material and this unit was far above any others 2 years ago. I think there isn't anything out there in this price bracket that is any better. It plays everything flawlessly including bluray material.
