Much Ado About ReadyNAS Ultra 4
Hi,
Does anyone have an estimate of how much time is needed to initialise 4 x 2Tb Hitachi HDD on a ReadyNAS Ultra 4?
I had this unit set up and it was working fine.
I decided to boot it up today to migrate my files from my NV+. Anyway, to keep it short, I had to set the Ultra 4 unit to Factory Default.
Now all that it's showing is "Testing disks" on the LCD screen. It's been running for about 1 hour or so.
Has anyone experienced this before?
Any help would be appreciated!

- AdiemusAspirantThank you all!!
PapaBear, StephenB and mdgm.
You guys have been most helpful. I just dropped my 2 drives at Hitachi this morning. Waiting for the drives to come back before I start the transfers. Will keep you guys updated.
many thanks! - AdiemusAspirant

You need all three connected to the switch to start the backup, but once that is done you only need the source and destination connected.Adiemus wrote: ...To accomplish the backup function, I would need to have both the Ultra 4, the NV+ and my PC hooked up to a switch right?...
Meaning to say, once the NAS to NAS backup has been initiated, I can shut down my PC?
Pardon my ignorance, how would I know when the backup is done? - sphardy1Apprentice

Once scheduled you do not need to interact with it in any way - no PC requiredPardon my ignorance, how would I know when the backup is done?
By setting an appropriate notification when setting up the job:
- AdiemusAspirantThanks sphardy.
Hitachi just got back to me. One of my drives has got a read/write problem. Will have to wait for the replacement to get my NAS backup up and going. - AdiemusAspirantAhh.... Finally, I got my 2 drives back from Hitachi. One for some reason, had some mac version of file system installed (don't ask me why), the other had a read/write problem. So, Hitachi replaced the latter.
Not taking my chances with a re-con drive. I bought a brand new harddisk to replace the re-con unit. *Sigh*...
Did a "factory reset" and the ReadyNAS showed me "Unable to install RAID" and Raidar shows "Corrupted Root" ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Thank God for forums, did a quick check and it seems to point to the RAM module. Well, a quick clean to the RAM module seems to do the work.
Am currently waiting for the firmware to finish with the installation. Let's hope everything turns out alright.
And guys, I need a favour. Anyone has a link or something that shows me step-by-step instructions on how to backup NAS to NAS?
I'm went through the menu in RAIDar, but got a bit confused over some terminologies.
I'm planning to backup my 4x1Tb ReadyNAS NV+ >>>>>> 4x2Tb ReadyNAS Ultra 4.
Thanks in advance! :) - PapaBear1ApprenticeAdiemus - I had to be walked through it the first time myself. Unfortunately, I have to leave shortly for a 1PM appointment and won't be back until after 5PM. At that point I will pull up all my images on setting up a backup job on the NV+ to the Ultra 4.
One thing you can do in the meantime is to mirror all the shares on the Ultra 4 to match exactly the spelling and Caps used for the shares on the NV+. This is critical. - AdiemusAspirantThanks PapaBear. Oddly, the system didn't resync as intended. I'm now adding the harddisks one by one. I just finished the second drive at 6AM in the morning. I'm currently at 8% on my 3rd drive. The way it looks, it'll take about almost 4 hours per drive.
By the time I'm done with the 4th drive, it'll probably be around 11PM, Singapore time... :(
I might have to get instructions from you only after the resync is completed. Many thanks!! - AdiemusAspirantSigh... This is getting extremely frustrating. After the resync of the 3rd drive. "VOL C LIFE SUPPORT" showed up!!
I'm in the midst of identifying the problem drive(s). It likely to be 2 or more drives right? - PapaBear1ApprenticeIf if occurred on the third drive that may be the problem, as you did successfully add the second. I would hot pull the third drive and hot add the remaining drive in the third slot and see what it does.
- AdiemusAspirantthat's the problem. the 3rd drive is the one i just bought. brand new!! i plugged it in as 2nd drive and it's resyncing now. almost 64%. zzz..... this is tiring....
