Multiple users sharing files
Greetings ReadyNAS experts!
I have a RN516 with OS6.2.2 and I'd like to set it up to allow multiple users to access/edit/delete the same files. I've searched around the forum and the web in general and cannot seem to figure out how to accomplish this.
My office has about 10 employees–-most on Macs. We've been using a ReadyNAS Pro Business Edition as one user, which seems to work okay, but I'm sure us each having our own user would be a better solution. We use the ReadyNAS as a way to keep project files in sync with each other. Our workflow is...
User A adds File01 to local system in a project directory.
User A syncs project directory to ReadyNAS using Chronosync (Mac) via the AFP protocol.
User B syncs project directory from ReadyNAS using Chronosync to local system.
User B edits File01 on local system in project directory.
User B syncs project directory to ReadyNAS using Chronosync.
... and so on
The way we've accomplished this on our ReadyNAS Pro Business Edition is one login for all users. What I'd like to do for our new RN516 is setup users for each user. My first attempt at doing so failed because ownership for the file User A created seems to prevent User B from editing, even if I put both users in the same group and set the permissions of the file to full read/write access for the group.
Am I missing something or is the way I envision this working not how ReadyNAS file permissions work? Or put another way, is the best/correct way to allow the same permissions on files for multiple employees to all share one user?
Thanks so much!
Chris

- NhellieVirtuosoHi, you may want to take a look at setting up access rights to files and folders.
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detai ... dynas-os-6 - fetopherAspirantThank you. I have read that guide and it doesn't answer my question.
The file access tab on my share is as such:
The folder owner is "production"
The folder group is "production"
When User A from group "production" creates a file, User B from group "production" cannot edit that same file. Is this the intended behavior of ReadyNAS user permissions, or is something amiss?
Thanks,
Chris - NhellieVirtuoso

Does User A and B access the same file at the same time? - fetopherAspirant

No. User A creates/saves, then closes. Then User B opens, tries to edit, but can't. - EskenderNGNETGEAR Employee RetiredHello,
Something to try:
On the "File Access"-Tab could you please leave "folder owner" and "folder group" set as "guest" and Read/Write access for "Everyone", basically the default settings for a new share. Then limit access to this share via the "Network Access"-Tab only.
See if this works for you.

This seems to have worked as I was expecting. Thanks!
For others who may find this, here are my settings: - StaggerLeeAspirantHello,
I'm in the process of setting up my RN 312 and configuring permissions. This thread confuses me. I would expect the OP's original configuration to work, but it didn't until the Folder Owner and Folder Group were set back to "guest." Can someone please explain what "guest" means in this case and why this is the expected behavior? (also, why the original configuration would not work?)
Thank you. - EskenderNGNETGEAR Employee RetiredHello,
you are right I also think it should have worked. However, it seems that access is restricted to the creator of the file which is the folder owner. Settings for "everyone" and "folder group" seem to be ignored when "File Access" is restricted. It could be a SMB/Windows problem but I am not sure. When guest is set as the folder owner newly created files can be accessed by everyone as guest requires no password. To be clear, everyone who has access, which again is restricted by the Network Access.

From several postings on this topic, I am thinking that there are some bugs here that need some attention from development.EskenderNG wrote: ...you are right I also think it should have worked. Uses should also be able to reset owners/groups and permissions on all the files in their shares (like OS 4.x). Now the only way to do that is to use the default "wide open" permissions - which is not acceptable to many people. If Netgear wants to minimize use of ssh, then they need to provide the right tools in the web ui. - StaggerLeeAspirantThanks EskenderNG and StephenB for at least confirming I'm not the only one confused by this.
