ReadyNAS 104 units need to be updated to 6.2.5 before updating to 6.4.0.
Try this:
1. Use USB Boot Recovery to go back to 6.2.5: ReadyNAS OS 6: USB Recovery Tool
2. Do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) or if you data you haven't backed up that might not have been wiped (just in case the factory default didn't get far enough to wipe your data in this special case) then perhaps try an OS Re-install before resorting to doing a factory default.
3. Update the firmware again.
4. Verify the firmware update is successful. If the unit stays on 6.2.5 you may need to use the workaround mentioned here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29961?utm_source=community&utm_medium=announcement&utm_campaign=readynasfirmware%22
5. OPTIONAL: Seeing you've recently wiped the unit you may wish to do another factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) to get a clean setup on the new firmware.

Hi,
Thank you for your quick response.
ReadyNAS 104 units need to be updated to 6.2.5 before updating to 6.4.0.
Includ this in alert massage befor instaing update or do automatic updates of needed FW versions. A lot of work now because of this.

The update prompt does prompt to go to 6.2.x firmware first. Did you try to update to 6.4.0 quite a while ago now? It might not have been the case if you updated quite a while ago.
The Release Notes also mention the required firmware update before updating to 6.4.0 now.- tomiaurednikDec 04, 2015Tutor
Hi,
I can’t boot NAS from USB flash
I tried next by following this instructions: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29952/~/readynas-os-6%3A-usb-recovery-tool#usbboot
My files in usb:
initrd-recovery.gz
NTGR_USBBOOT_INFO.txt (empty file? This is normal?)
ReadyNASOS-6.1.8-arm.img
uImage-recovery
I tried with three different USB flashes and three different versions:
6.1.8, 6.2.5, 6.4.1 .
Every time NAS starts booting and stays in this mode until I leave. I stop booting by unplugging the power cable.
I'm in hurry now.
Any help will be appreciated.
