Need help selecting backup/RN features #24580559

Ok, I am having some difficulty translating RN features into function ;)

I have ReadyNAS 316 16TB RAID6 in XRAID2 mode.

I have created some shares and mapped a windows 7 drive to backup a bunch of laptop files.

But here is what I am trouble figuring out.

1. Automatic (realtime?) backup/replicate of Windows laptop directory to RN
2. Any type of backup solution for Android devices (photos, files, notes, etc)
3. Cloud storage and availability from laptop/Android/Linux variants/adhoc (from any machine by supplying proper login)

It seems when I use NG's support/FAQ/KB/etc all the 'downloads' that seem like they would be a Windows Client software simply open up Frontview :(
When I browse network devices on my Win 7 machine and select RN316, instead of opening it to shares, it launches the Frontview webpage interface. Ugh!

I do NOT want to do every bit of file management via a webpage. Not sure if this is because of OS6.2.2?

I purchased the RN300 to avoid building a Linux box from scratch and adding all the services. It will be easy, they said. It will save you frustration, they said :D

I mapped the network drive by IP Address (internal) and windows credentials for my admin account. Obviously this is problematic when outside the office with no access. I am accustomed to old-school access methods of port forwarding, static routes, credential lists, etc.

A question about RN's Cloud services. Is the RN316 providing the Cloud access directly, or via NG's servers? I purchased the RN316 so I didn't have to rely on any external company's servers for storage, security, or access.

Why? Considering recent rulings that permit ANY email stored on an email server for more than 6 months can be accessed by authorities WITHOUT A SEARCH WARRANT (!), how long will it be before the same is true of Cloud storage? Then what happens when JoeBlow has illegal stuff on his account and the server that happens to also house your data is confiscated or destroyed, or even taken offline and crawled for...who knows what. A bad path to be avoided.

Besides, having local (ethernet speeds) access to our data is important to us.

Maybe I'm being dense trying to find these solutions? I've looked at the Available Apps section, but little info is available about them and each leads again to NG's general help site, not a topic specific site.

If I need to add an app or service to my RN, no problem, I am open to recommendations. I don't mind purchasing a reasonable product, but not looking for monthly fees when my hardware and access is already paid for ;)

So somebody please help this thickheaded IT veteran.

Thanks

  • Here is a good litmus test for the lack of ability to sync files outside the User directory (without a workaround).

Change the Netgear advertising and feature list for all ReadyNAS systems to include an asterisk next to the 'Sync or backup files automatically' feature (however it is worded). Note with the asterisk that it is limited to operating ONLY on files and top level directories within the User directory, and only one user's files at a time.

Float that up to corporate and see how the Marketing team likes that. See if they consider that a positive footnote/correction to the RN feature set.

Think they will expect that to help or hurt sales? Think it will be a benefit or a shortfall?

Better yet, make that new truthful advertising a marketing blitz and wait for feedback from the market and potential or current users.

Then we'll all know whether minimalizing the BUG, implying I am the only user who cares about it, really holds water.

If the NG team is happy, satisfied and proud of that limitation, stop hiding it. Make it clear in all advertising.

I'll bet you can guess where I'd lay my bets ;)

BTW, if it isn't good enough to advertise, it isn't good enough, period. Tell me NG likes it in it's current limited implementation, tell the world NG is happy with it as is.

That is your litmus test. If it doesn't fly in public, it shouldn't fly internally, either.

Perspective. It's either about pride and honesty, or excuses. Every company has to pick one.

NetworkedinPA: I get the frustration (and I think mdgm does too). ReadyCloud still needs a lot of work. That has to be obvious to the dev and product management teams. Hopefully they will address the problems quickly, or at least show some substantial progress.

FWIW, at my company (not Netgear), all reports are reviewed and reclassified anyway. Bugs turn into feature requests; feature requests turn into bugs; priorities are set. I think mdgm is saying that Netgear does the same.

It would less stressful if the agent could simply enter your classification (bug or feature), especially when it is being reviewed again. Having the agent reclassify it always makes the person reporting it feel that they weren't really heard (and the customer's view is more important than the agent's - so it ought to flow upstream).

I hear you and I agree. I also think mdgm "gets it" too.

I just hope NG gets it ;) Having thousands or tens of thousands of subdirectories on a computer and essentially being told that 'We can sync with about 10 of them, that should be good enough' leaves me shaking my head.

They're so close to an awesome package. All it takes is some effort and attention. Changing to a file selection dialog instead of a User only directory is literally about 10 mins, plus any recompile or testing. A no-brainer.

And, yes, when you're told, "Well, if enough people request a change, we'll make it," it IS insulting. Especially when it is a feature that was advertised and a key decision point to purchase. They said they had it, I expect it to work. And we as customers are absolutely, without a doubt, 100% entitled to receive what was promised and advertised. Period.

Doesn't matter how many people notice (or know how to find the details), or how vigorously they ask. They promised, they must deliver. Anything else sounds like the customer has to beg for the goodwill of the dev team to get these errors fixed.

That is NOT how it works. Want our business? Have features we users want and DELIVER it in a stable and reliable format. Otherwise all the marketing in the world has little value. If we don't get value, we'll go somewhere else.

The techs I've talked to and the (top tier) vendors I spoke to recently absolutely "get it," too.

I just hope the other levels of NG get it. I get the impression the ReadyNAS has been more of a pet project or a hobby in the past. But it has some real potential now. It's time to take it seriously and get down to business.

Stability, features, extendability, bleeding edge, ongoing development. In that order.

Besides, "Not Really" is a pet peeve of mine. Does it *really* do xyz? Well, not really, sort of, sometimes, if you workaround like this.... :hammer:

It either does it, or it doesn't.
