NETGEAR ReadyNAS deleted file recovery

I am new to management of NETGEAR NAs devices, but we have a windows 2008 R2 VM, which has a mapped drive to a file share on a NETGEAR ReadyNAS via SMB. Our collegue asked what would happen if someone deleted all the files of the ReadyNAS via the file share mapped onto the windows VM. If you dont have a backup of the data, does the NETGEAR itself have any sort of recovery options for accidentially/purposelly deleted files? Does it work like Windows and if files exceed a certain size bypass any form of recycle bin option?

Welcome to the ReadyNAS Community.  I am a Mac user so I am not that familiar with the set-up you described but from a ReadyNAS perspective, take a look at using Snapshots.

This is very much like Apple's Time Machine in that it can take Hourly/Daily "snapshots" of the data in a Share and stores it within the Snapshot folder of that Share.  If a file is deleted from the Share, you can go into the Snapshot and recover that file.

Obviously, if the entire Share is deleted from the ReadyNAS, there won't be a snapshot folder to recover from.

You don't say what model ReadyNAS you have or what the OS version is but if you have an X86 unit, you can consider using ReadyDR to back-up the Snapshots to another ReadyNAS or to the same ReadyNAS, although that leaves your data more vulnerable.

You should also consider doing a back-up of your data either to another ReadyNAS or to a USB drive attached to your existing ReadyNAS.  The ReadyNAS backup service has an option to not delete files that are deleted from the source folders so you could recover old files, even if they were previously deleted from the ReadyNAS.

    Hope that helps.

    Regards,

    David

The answer depends on what NAS you have.  What ReadyNAS model, and what firwmare is it running?

But as a general statement, RAID is not enough to keep your data safe.  So you need a backup plan that saves the files to at least one other device.  My own practice is to make sure I have three copies of everything that matters - the primary copy and two backups.

You should also consider disaster recovery (what would happen if flood, fire, theft, ransomware, or other bad event destroyed all the data in your location).
