I had a long reply all typed out adressing your suggestions and with a few questions of my own out but then decided I'd give it another go and decided to take the NAS apart, clean it and put back the original fan I replaced with a quieter one when I bought it years ago. Turned it on without any disks and to my surprise it actually booted and gave the no disk error. Filled with relief I turned it off, inserted the drives and booted it up and after checking the array it actually booted successfully, all my stuff is there and there appears to be no corruption.
I have no idea what it was that did it, it wasn't that dusty and the fan still worked when I pulled it out but at this point I don't care. Now it's time to back up my stuff and decide on what NAS to buy because I'm not trusting this traitorous toaster ever again.

You really should have a backup strategy with any NAS - RAID alone isn't enough to keep your data safe.
One option is to buy a new NAS and then re-purpose the NV+ v2 as a backup for it. That can work with a new NAS from any vendor.
