if i buy a second-hand NetGear ReadyNAS Duo 2-Bay (Diskless) RND2000 and connect both my HDDs, will it start working right away?
Or is there any setup/configurations that has to be made?
thanks...

Before you get a used NAS, I'd try powering down and removing both disks (labeling by slot). Then power up. If RAIDar finds the NAS and reports "no disks" then the problem is likely with the disks, and not the chassis.
If that turns out to be your situation, get a scratch disk and try doing a factory install with only that disk in place. If the works normally, then for certain the problem is on one or both hard drives.

The NAS boots from an OS partittion on the disks. The boot flash also includes an install package, and if the firmware version in the flash differs from the OS partitoin, the system will attempt to overinstall the flash version (either upgrading or downgrading the OS version on the disks).
Normally this is not a problem - settings and data are preserved. Though if you are migrating disks to a NAS and don't know the firmware version that was installed, then it is best to start with a scratch disk. Then after the default installation you install firmware that matches the old NAS. The result is that the flash package matches what is on the disks, and the system won't attempt to overinstall.
Also label the drives by slot before you remove them - you want to preserve the order.
