New NAS user- can't access shares directly (only in browser)

Guest access is enabled as far as I can tell. The workgroup name was "VOLUME" but i changed it to "WORKGROUP" to match what it says on my Win XP laptop, but that didn't help - I still can't see either PC through the Windows Explorer.
My Win 7 laptop is a work computer that it usually connected to a VPN. That one shows a local work domain instead of a workgroup. I don't want to change anything there that might affect my ability to connect to work, but I should be able to do this with with the other PC at least.
Stumped.
