New NAS user- can't access shares directly (only in browser)

Often advice/suggestions are offered by one person, and it can get confusing for everybody if there are two or more users seeking help on the same thread. Let's leave this for now, and if it does get confusing I will split it.

Start by making sure the network connection in Windows is home or work (not public). Also look at the advanced sharing options for home/work networks in the network sharing center (control panel), and check that "network discovery" is on.
And make sure the workgroup on the PC matches the Duo.
Also open a CMD window (enter CMD in the start menu), and type "ping hostname", and see if it can locate the NAS. As mdgm suggests, also try pinging the IP address.
