Newbie Wireless Setup to ReadyNas Ultra - Help Please
Complete newbie to NAS and networking here - also don't know too much about the Macs that I have either!! I have browsed and searched the forum but can't find the answer - apologies if answered before.
OK - I have a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard (10.6.8 ) and an old iMac G5 on Leopard (10.5.8 ). I've just bought a ReadyNas Ultra 4 nice and cheap through ibood. I connect to the internet wirelessly using a Thompson TG585 v8 wireless router.
I used Ethernet from the LAN1 Ethernet port on my Ultra to connect to my router. I was expecting to follow the set up and installation procedures in the Ultra manual and then be able to access the Ultra wirelessly. I'm using Raider 4.3.0 and cannot identify the Ultra using either the iMac or the MacBook.
I have connected my iMac to the router using Ethernet and it can find the Ultra - I've run the Setup Wizard, although most of it didn't mean much to me. I have successfully transferred files and been able to access them - all with my iMac connected to the router through Ethernet.
The idea was to transfer all of the data from both Macs (and external hard drive) and be able to access all files from both Macs remotely within my house. The files are mainly music in iTunes, photos and video.
I'd be very grateful if someone can tell me how to do this.
I should also mention that I can access the Set Up Wizard wirelessly when I type in my IP address/admin. Confused.....!
Sorry if the info is a bit vague, but as you can tell from my language - this is all rather foreign!!
Thanks in advance,
Luke
Ps - why did this put smilies in when I'd written (10.6.8 ) and (10.5.8 ) - without the space before the last bracket??!

- sphardy1ApprenticeYour wireless issues accessing the NAS from your macs is caused by your router.
Check for an option in the router configuration interface that enables multicast over wireless - this is commonly disabled by default on Thomson routers. Can't give you the specific option as a) not all Thomson routers have one and b) I'm guessing the router was provided by your ISP (most Thomson routers are) and so the UI is probably heavily customized to that ISP
If you cannot find such an option I'm afraid you will need to consider investing in a new router. - TechnoMuppetAspirantThanks for your quick reply Sphardy - I'll try playing around with the router later tonight and let you know how I get on. And yes, the router was provided by my ISP provider.....! Cheers.....
- TechnoMuppetAspirantOK - I've checked my router settings and multicast was already enabled. Within the router 'Home Network' settings the ReadyNas is recognised. I've changed the type from 'Generic' to 'Mass Storage Device'.
In Addressing it says tje IP address Assignment is DHCP.
Within Connection Sharing, it says Game or Service is set to AIM Talk - should this be changed?
Thanks again...... - sphardy1ApprenticeTry also to disable the multicast setting - depending on how its supported, disabling it may be the appropriate action
- TechnoMuppetAspirantThanks again for quick reply. Tried disabling and no luck....
- sphardy1ApprenticeThen I can suggest nothing further - the symptoms are very typical of a router issue, and in particular Thomson routers seem very prone to this issue. Macs are always affected due to the use of bonjour to advertise servers, and this fault specifically impacts the method used by bonjour
