The SMART test is run by the drive itself.
Did you run the Quick Test in Lifeguard (which is the SMART test)? Or just the extended test?

You could try rebooting w/o the disk in place and then hot insert it.
If it fails again, then test the disk with Western Digital's Lifeguard in a windows PC (running the built-in smart test).
This is a used disk, correct? Power-on hours suggests it's at least 3 months old.

Unfortunately, hot inserting the disk did not change anything and the disk is still rejected as failing SMART test.
Western Digital's Lifeguard in a windows PC says the disk is OK (PASS) - as did CrystalDiskInfo and even ReadyNAS in component status (!).
And the disk is pretty new. I bought it to expand my volume, but I had reached the max space expansion (on a 4 OS). So I had to reset my NAS to factory default - and thus had to backup all my data before. It took quite a long time - and the disk was in the NAS during all this backup processing. That's why power-on shows it's been on for 3 months - but it has not really been used at all ...

You have two empty slots, correct? Did you try it inserting it in both?
