NV+ V2 Installation & Linux

My shiny new NAS arrived today, so I installed the disks powered it up and settled down to read the paper manual. After reading the manual it advised me to read the CD which eventually seemed to advise me to install some software on my box. Ok before I run a shell as root I have a look to see what it's going to do . . . First problem . . . the script appears to be trying to sniff out JAVA environmental settings (it might struggle a bit though as this box has no JVM!) . . . ok not to worry I have another box I can use upstairs that should have a JVM, so I goes upstairs and insert the CD run the shell, answer some questions about install locations etc and it all appears to be done . . . So I run the executable . . . and hit the second problem . . . I can see lots of help text and the only button that isn't greyed out is rescan, after many presses of rescan I've made no progress, although I note some errorlog file is being written in the installation directory, the software seems to be moaning about a JAVA IO exception ho hum. . . what to do ? ? ?
So I log on to my router and find the IP it's assigned to the NAS, out of curiosity I then aim my browser at that IP and am confronted with a web based admin / config tool which I use to set up the NAS, I then create a new mount point and mount the share on my new NAS using NFS . . . As far as I can tell this leaves me with . . .
1) A fully functioning NAS
2) 4 more machines to edit fstab on (I know 5 machines on a home LAN is ridiculous - part of the reason for getting a NAS)
3) Wondering what on earth the non functioning Linux version of the install software is supposed to do?
