Well, the driving factor for me was the whole 'bit rot' issue. You want your NAS to be rock solid. You want to put data there and know it is safer than anywhere else. You want the backups that you make (possibly to another NAS) to be known good copies of the data. I'm moving to WDC Red hard drives as they seem to be a good choice for a NAS. Their URE (uncorrectable read error) rate is >1 in 10^14 or ~ 1 bad bit per 12 TB. We used to say on a clear hard disk you could see forever when we'd get a new 20MB drive, now 12 TB isn't even impressive. Btrfs and ZFS are the only viable FS's with built in fault tolerance (note I'm referring to the filesystem, not the underlying hardware) you could easily deploy on a CE NAS and Netgear is the only manufacturer supporting both in the markets I am in.
Certainly yes, put FreeNAS or Nexenta on there if you like (and I like and have used both), I'm just looking for 'safe' and 'simple'.
And before I forget, I'd like to thank everyone that helped get OS6 running on the EOL hardware. Thank you!
