OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!

you dont need to mount it,
boot a live distro and dd the image out of it twice then md5 them both and if both the same delete one keep the other safe.
Then you can delete format etc the 128mb usb and place whatever you like on it.
When you want to go back to netgear firmware just dd back the image.
