The "corrupt root" error mentioned in that article would also be obtained if you put used disks in older ReadyNAS models. From what Skywalker said above it sounds like ReadyNAS OS is even more cautious about wiping used disks than older OSes were. Which is not a bad change as many users have put a disk full of data in a ReadyNAS while it was running only to find the disk was wiped automatically.
I believe a change is coming in the next release to make it clear that if you boot up the NAS with used disks installed that these need to be wiped by doing a factory default.
As mentioned in that review some missing features from 4.2.x are coming.
