OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!
Update: It is now unofficially possible using NTGR images to update legacy hardware to os6.X
See Post #3, for directions to install 6.2.1 on x86 Ultra and Pro Models. (ARM NOT SUPPORTED by this OS)
Be forewarned, this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and likely voids any warranty support from NTGR
Supported so far: pro 2/4/6, ultra 2/4/6, old pro / Pioneer Pro, 2100v2
Not Supported: NVX and 2100v1
Thanks go out to "HomeBrew Anonymous" for making this possible.
Update 2: A firmware image to downgrade back to 4.2.26 is now available. See this thread. While this downgrade should get you a working system again on the supported firmware, be forewarned this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and NetGear also does not provide support for this downgrade. If you have issues seek help on these forums.
Original Post/Gripes
I have been reading these forums since Monday's announcement and there has been a resounding "ooof" regarding the fact the Ultras and Pros are unsupported for future OS improvements.
To clear the air: it would appear Netgear will never support os6 on past hardware. I have almost come to grips with this, and at least they have been open and honest with their forward direction and aren't stringing us along. viewtopic.php?f=138&t=70131
The upside is our devices still work and are mostly stable and eventually we can upgrade to a new shell that has os6 support, but in the meantime our $500-1000 investment is unable to take advantage of modern features we all desire.
I don't think I can add a poll here at RN forums, but I would like to garner support for a 100% unsupported home brew of the os6 on Pro6 units.
If we get enough support perhaps a talented member(s) here would help release a homebrew of sorts.
The 3 main caveats are:
1. Netgear will never be held responsible/your warranty is void
2. A format is required (new FS and OS)
3. Data loss is highly possible
If you are still interested please post a reply to this thread.
mdgm and I have decided that its time to lock this thread. So please do post any new OS6 on Legacy issues on their own threads.

- sirozhaAspirantNo VAAI - that's too bad.
What about the fan control? Does OS 6.08 have fan control for legacy ReadyNAS units, such as ReadyNAS Pro 6 Business?
I've just purchased a QNAP TS-569L, and am migrating all of my files, VMs, Time Machine backups, etc. to the QNAP. The performance of my ReadyNAS Pro is absolutely dismal. ISCSI started crashing over a year ago, and Negear never resolved the issue (even though the unit is still under warranty). After the previous crash, I updated to 4.2.23, and for several weeks, everything seemed fine. I started thinking that my issue was finally resolved just to encounter another crash a week ago, from which I can no longer recover my VMs. So, iSCSI is very important to me, and it's completely fallen by the wayside with Netgear.
Before I get rid of my ReadyNAS Pro, I want to give it one more chance with OS 6. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired

No. Running ReadyNAS OS on legacy devices is not supported. - sirozhaAspirantI know running OS 6 on legacy devices is not supported. Frankly, I couldn't care less about Netgear support at this point - after having dealt with them for a year just to find out how sorry this company is. I've never bought anything from Netgear for that very reason. I became a fan of ReadyNAS when it was made by Infrant.
By the way, the built quality of the ReadyNAS Pro is still superior to QNAP built quality. And when trying to choose between QNAP and Synology, I've read numerous reports of how QNAP built quality is much superior to that of Synology. So, ReadyNAS Pro is a superior built device with absolutely dismal software developers behind it at this point. After the Jedi left, software development and support is just a disaster.
What I'm trying to find out is if OS 6.08 finally has fan control working on legacy devices. I may keep my ReadyNAS Pro if I can throw OS 6 on and deem it reliable after some testing. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThere are still a number of Jedi at NetGear including Skywalker (who was one of the first Jedi to join the forum) who has posted in this thread a number of times.
Since NetGear doesn't need fan control working on legacy devices for internal testing on the new OS I doubt it will be added.
You have a few options.
1. Consider the advice in this thread: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=71155
2. Make sure you are running the latest BIOS (download the logs - Status > Logs > Download all logs and check the version in bios_ver.log). Get a VGA header cable (http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=70133&p=390511#p390511) and connect it to your motherboard. Hook up to a monitor via VGA and connect a USB keyboard. Under Hardware Health Configuration in the BIOS there are options to let the BIOS handle the fan control. This solution works well and would mean you wouldn't have to worry about getting an OS to do fan control. - sirozhaAspirantIf I went the BIOS fan control route, what BIOS version should the ReadyNAS Pro 6 (ver. 1) be running, and where do I get the upgrade and the instructions on how to upgrade it?
Also, is the fan control in BIOS any good? I cannot have loud fans.
Thanks! - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou could try with the BIOS currently on your NAS.
It may be a little louder than it was running 4.2.x. If you don't like it you can easily change the setting back. - ATCISTutorFor you OS6 Guru's out there not following this thread:

Would you kindly take a peek and lend some insight as to what I'm doing wrong. I'm trying to enable temperature graphing in the GUI. I've been struggling with this for about four hours now and my temperature graphs are still empty. . . :nashammer:
Thanks in advance! - arnomcAspirantAbout Dynamic DNS (which i need), I have seen this 4-5 year old post, but would it work on a OS 6 system ?
viewtopic.php?p=110351
Or is there any other solution (linux package ddns?) because RN6 is a modified debian wheezy/sid, like this one for exple :
http://wiki.debian.org/DDNS or http://packages.debian.org/stable/ddns3-client
(please note: I am not familiar with any linux distrib)
Anybody here could give me a hint on this ?
It would be VERY much appreciated - MACDaHacAspirantUpgraded to 6.0.8. on my Ultra 2, ReadyCloud seems to work now, though still checking other stuff.
- arnomcAspirantThanks for reply, could you enlighten me a bit on ReadyCloud :
My ultra2 will have dynamic IP from my ISP on my main location (or it will be changing country in Europe were each provider has a specific ADSL box), does using ReadyCloud requires for client-user to install ReadyNas Remote (for 4.2.23)? or does Netgear provide a workaround with ReadyCloud, in order to provide http/s access without installing any software ?
