OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!
Update: It is now unofficially possible using NTGR images to update legacy hardware to os6.X
See Post #3, for directions to install 6.2.1 on x86 Ultra and Pro Models. (ARM NOT SUPPORTED by this OS)
Be forewarned, this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and likely voids any warranty support from NTGR
Supported so far: pro 2/4/6, ultra 2/4/6, old pro / Pioneer Pro, 2100v2
Not Supported: NVX and 2100v1
Thanks go out to "HomeBrew Anonymous" for making this possible.
Update 2: A firmware image to downgrade back to 4.2.26 is now available. See this thread. While this downgrade should get you a working system again on the supported firmware, be forewarned this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and NetGear also does not provide support for this downgrade. If you have issues seek help on these forums.
Original Post/Gripes
I have been reading these forums since Monday's announcement and there has been a resounding "ooof" regarding the fact the Ultras and Pros are unsupported for future OS improvements.
To clear the air: it would appear Netgear will never support os6 on past hardware. I have almost come to grips with this, and at least they have been open and honest with their forward direction and aren't stringing us along. viewtopic.php?f=138&t=70131
The upside is our devices still work and are mostly stable and eventually we can upgrade to a new shell that has os6 support, but in the meantime our $500-1000 investment is unable to take advantage of modern features we all desire.
I don't think I can add a poll here at RN forums, but I would like to garner support for a 100% unsupported home brew of the os6 on Pro6 units.
If we get enough support perhaps a talented member(s) here would help release a homebrew of sorts.
The 3 main caveats are:
1. Netgear will never be held responsible/your warranty is void
2. A format is required (new FS and OS)
3. Data loss is highly possible
If you are still interested please post a reply to this thread.
mdgm and I have decided that its time to lock this thread. So please do post any new OS6 on Legacy issues on their own threads.

- I turned off the fan service and restarted. Fans seem to be working as expected. I had already noticed that OLEDS dim-out a few minutes after boot-up. Great!
Now it might be nice to have an app that let's us manage our nas if not a web interface that re-scales properly when viewing in an iPhone.
My hats off to the developers who seem to be supporting our legacy hardware!!!! This no doubt means a lot to everyone on the forum who have legacy x86 boxes in addition to rekindling our trust as customers of Netgear products. At least, this is how I feel now in light of the recent releases.

I brought that up in the beta of OS6 and it seemed they really didn't get what the problem was. All they had to do was try it on the device and should have immediately seem the issue.
Hats off to the devs as well! Great to see some positive movement towards the customer base.- XophileAspirantThanks everyone for posting experiences in this thread!
So for a Ultra 4 the issues with os6 are:
1. Fan control needs a "hack"?
2. LED always on?
Anything else I need to think of? Since I'm about to do a factory reset soon I'm thinking about going to OS6 at the same time. I only use my Readynas to store music and video and stream it to clients at home. I use some extensions as well but nothing critical. - F_L_Tutor

I have an Ultra 4 and for me the fan started to work directly.
Also I have no issues with the LED. - XophileAspirantGood news! Any other issues with os6 that you're aware of on a Ultra 4?
- mangroveApprenticeWell, performance issues with BTRFS in some cases, which is kind of a biggie.

From what I know, number 2 above is specific to the 6 drive x86 legacy ReadyNAS's (Pro 6, etc.). I have an Ultra 4 as well, and the front panel display has worked properly with OS6 since day one. I haven't tried the latest beta, but your item 1 above still seems to be true with the latest stable release.
So for those of you on this thread that seem to have access to inside information, what about that Fan speed control hack? Any future plans to have that built into an upcoming release? Just curious. . . - tony359Apprenticequick question: are Netgear going to make OS6 an official upgrade for legacy boxes or will it only be an unofficial upgrade?
- chirpaLuminary
They've always stated its unofficial and not supported. All the work so far to run OS6 on the legacy boxes has been community driven, with Skywalker giving us extra support.tony359 wrote: quick question: are Netgear going to make OS6 an official upgrade for legacy boxes or will it only be an unofficial upgrade? - Just want to say, that I have not kept up with this thread for a long time, but now I see that there is very easy (other than reformatting data) way to upgrade to os 6, KUDO's! to all involved.
Question, not clearly explained on first posts;
part 1) the modified image is only required for conversion from 4.x to os 6?
part 2) once upgraded to os6 via modified image, is it always required to use a new modified image to upgrade to latest os6, or can standard (non-modified images) os 6 upgrades be applied over existing modified os6 install?
