OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!
Update: It is now unofficially possible using NTGR images to update legacy hardware to os6.X
See Post #3, for directions to install 6.2.1 on x86 Ultra and Pro Models. (ARM NOT SUPPORTED by this OS)
Be forewarned, this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and likely voids any warranty support from NTGR
Supported so far: pro 2/4/6, ultra 2/4/6, old pro / Pioneer Pro, 2100v2
Not Supported: NVX and 2100v1
Thanks go out to "HomeBrew Anonymous" for making this possible.
Update 2: A firmware image to downgrade back to 4.2.26 is now available. See this thread. While this downgrade should get you a working system again on the supported firmware, be forewarned this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and NetGear also does not provide support for this downgrade. If you have issues seek help on these forums.
Original Post/Gripes
I have been reading these forums since Monday's announcement and there has been a resounding "ooof" regarding the fact the Ultras and Pros are unsupported for future OS improvements.
To clear the air: it would appear Netgear will never support os6 on past hardware. I have almost come to grips with this, and at least they have been open and honest with their forward direction and aren't stringing us along. viewtopic.php?f=138&t=70131
The upside is our devices still work and are mostly stable and eventually we can upgrade to a new shell that has os6 support, but in the meantime our $500-1000 investment is unable to take advantage of modern features we all desire.
I don't think I can add a poll here at RN forums, but I would like to garner support for a 100% unsupported home brew of the os6 on Pro6 units.
If we get enough support perhaps a talented member(s) here would help release a homebrew of sorts.
The 3 main caveats are:
1. Netgear will never be held responsible/your warranty is void
2. A format is required (new FS and OS)
3. Data loss is highly possible
If you are still interested please post a reply to this thread.
mdgm and I have decided that its time to lock this thread. So please do post any new OS6 on Legacy issues on their own threads.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredOkay then you will need to try the free version then.
Take a look at http://www.plexapp.com/repo/pool/main/p ... rver-ros6/
Download the latest .debs there then do
dpkg -i plexmediaserver-ros6-binaries_0.9.7.22.510-8faeab3_amd64.deb plexmediaserver-ros6_0.9.7.22.510-8faeab3_amd64.deb
touch /apps/plexmediaserver/.localapp - alltetAspirantGetting error i guess the first plexmediaserver-ros6-binaries_0.9.7.22.510-8faeab3_amd64.deb should be something else? like plexmediaserver-ros6-binaries_0.9.7.16.462-6ed0547-netgear1.deb?? not sure tough..
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredHmmm. Did you install both debs on one line as I suggested above? I would think the version I mentioned should work.
- alltetAspiranti copied the text so yes. i get:
:/apps# dpkg -i plexmediaserver-ros6-binaries_0.9.7.22.510-8faeab3_amd64.deb plexmediaserver-ros6_0.9.7.22.510-8fae

plexmediaserver-ros6-binaries - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou need to have changed the working directory to the directory in which you have the .deb files. It doesn't look like you've done this or one of the .deb files is missing from the directory. Alternatively unless there is a word-wrapping issue it looks like you entered the command over two lines not one.
e.g. if you want to put the .deb files on the "data" volume in a folder/share you have created called "mydownloads" you would do e.g.
# cd /data/mydownloads
# wget http://www.plexapp.com/repo/pool/main/p/plexmediaserver-ros6/plexmediaserver-ros6-binaries_0.9.7.22.510-8faeab3_amd64.deb
# wget http://www.plexapp.com/repo/pool/main/p/plexmediaserver-ros6/plexmediaserver-ros6_0.9.7.22.510-8faeab3_amd64.deb
# dpkg -i plexmediaserver-ros6-binaries_0.9.7.22.510-8faeab3_amd64.deb plexmediaserver-ros6_0.9.7.22.510-8faeab3_amd64.deb
# touch /apps/plexmediaserver/.localapp
Note using wget you can download the .deb files directly to the NAS. If you already have put the .deb files in this directory you can of course skip this step. - alltetAspirantOk. its clear im an idiot. Did not place both files in there. All works great! Thank you!
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredPlexPass can be obtained via subscription or via a one-off lifetime payment and would give you early access to newer builds still before they are available to the general public and the ability to do things like use PlexSync to sync files e.g. to an iPad to view while you are offline. You can read more about it here: https://my.plexapp.com/subscription/about
If the latest free build is working for you and you don't need any of the PlexPass features then that's fine, but it is an option if you want it. - IridabikeAspirantUpgraged my Pro 6 firmware to 2.0 under OS6 but alas it has not fixed my backlight dimming timer problem. Strangely display inverse video flashing when holding the power button is now back.
- glemAspirantI cannot restrict NFS access on a share folder to one hostname or more, just "anyhost" option works fine.
When I restrict access to one hostname or more, I receive on NFS client "mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting nasaddress:/foldername"
All is good on frontview menu, but nothing works (read, read/write, root access)
Does anyone know this problem ? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredPut in the I.P. address(es) of the host(s) in the field not the hostname.
