OSX Lion, delays when opening certain docs on NAS
I haven't seen anybody else discussing this, but it's so noticeable to me I find it hard to believe nobody else has noticed it.
The setup:
Mac Pro running OSX 10.6.8
MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.1.
ReadyNAS Pro Business RAIDiator 4.2.19
With the Snow Leopard Mac, if I double-click on a TextEdit document or a document that Preview can open (jpeg, pdf) that's located on the ReadyNAS, it opens almost instantly.
With the Lion Mac, if I double-click on the same kinds of documents located on the ReadyNAS, there's a delay of between 7 and 15 seconds before the document finally opens. It's annoying because I know how fast accessing the ReadyNAS can be.
After playing with this for a while, I'm reasonably sure this has something to do with Lion's new Versions feature (I don't think it's a ReadyNAS problem/bug). TextEdit and Preview are both Versions-capable apps in Lion. Documents belonging to non-Versions-capable apps (Microsoft Word, for instance), still open almost instantly in Lion for NAS-located documents.
In the case of Lion, I think Lion is creating a new version or trying to access previous versions of the document during the delay between double-clicking and opening.
I tried disabling local snapshots with:
sudo tmutil disablelocal
But that made no difference. I tried disabling Restore/Resume for TextEdit with RestoreMeNot (http://www.restoremenot.info/download/RestoreMeNot.zip) but that didn't make any difference, either (I was pretty sure it wouldn't).
I think it may be possible to disable or hinder Versions
http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/16/t ... s-sort-of/
but it's a fairly radical procedure and I'm not sure it's advisable.
Q: Has anyone else noticed this behavior with Lion?
Q: Is the double-click delay just something we're going to have to live with going forward with Lion and any Versions-capable documents?

- swamp2TutorNo Time Capsule but will reboot right now.
- swamp2TutorBrand new Apple firmware (just in case). Rebooted NAS. Little to no improvement in speed of icon population in browsing NAS directories of photos and similarly no performance improvement when opening one to two dozen with Preview app. Ugh.
- swamp2TutorBump, anyone, similar problem or solution?
- I don't have any updates on this problem. But I was reminded that the problem's still there last night when I selected 10 TextEdit documents residing on the NAS and typed command-O and then waited for about a minute until all of them opened.
