Permissions Issue

Hi,

Yesterday I have copied a HD to a specific folder on my NAS using the backup function.

While configuring the backup job, I failed to do it correctly and forgot to tick the "change ownership" box. See pic 1.

Now, Is there a way to correct this after the files are already copied to the NAS?

When trying to delete the folder so I can start over again, I got error -8072 which is all about permissions if correct. See pic 2.

See pic 3 for screen of the permission I have now. I cannot make myself owner, nor change the ownership of "everyone". It always result in the error:

"The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have the necessary permission."

What to do now? Please advice.

    dim73,

You can reset the permissions on all the files of a share by:
    1. Login to Admin UI of ReadyNAS (https://ip-address/admin)
    2. Go to Shares\Share Listings
    3. Click on the icon next to the share name you want to fix the permissions on
    4. Go to the advanced options tab
    5. Set the permissions as you want them to be.
    6. Click the check box next to "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings. This option is useful in cases where you are changing security levels and need to workaround file access problems.".
    7. Click apply in the bottom right corner of the screen and it will change the permissions for you.
  • Ah. Nice. How could I miss this? :)

One small question so I don't f**k up again... How do I set the permissions correctly?

Do I use the user name on my Mac or on the NAS? Can I make it worse by doing something wrong?

Thanks for your help. Well appreciated!

  • to set the permissions you would have 2 ways to go about it if it is not joined to a domain then just
-go to the share and add the users that you want to have access to it and separate by ( , )

if you set guest access then it will let you in even if you are not a user

if it is joined to a domain
then go to your dc and access the shares via ciffs and right click and go to properties then security
and you would set them through there

    Dim73,

Set the user and group to "nouser" and "nogroup" with full read/write access or to a user that is defined on the ReadyNAS. The ReadyNAS doesn't know about users on your system unless it's joined to a domain.
