Plex doesn't always create tumbnail for videos

In Plex on ReadyNAS 516, tumbnails for video files are not always created. It seems a bit random to me. E.g. from a "Frozen Planet" promo CD, I ripped 9 MP4 files, all with the same tool and settings. Out of the nine, I only get tumbnails for 5, 6, 8 and 9 as partly depicted here:

  1. Does anyone have the same experience?

  2. Can anyone tell me how I can get Plex to create the missing tumbnails? (Already tried to rescan the entire Video folder, but that didn't help.)

  • Turns out there is a naming convention for videos of tv shows and movies (see: https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/topic/85085-video-file-naming-convention/ ) in Plex. For movies, you need to put the video in a directory with the movie name, followed by the year between braces. In the file name, use the same approach. Additional comment can be placed between square brackets. Example:

    \\<nas-xx-xx-xx>\Movies\Stand By Me (1986)\
    \\<nas-xx-xx-xx>\Movies\Stand By Me (1986)\Stand By Me (1986).mkv
\\<nas-xx-xx-xx>\Movies\Stand By Me (1986)\Stand By Me (1986) [Music Video Stand By Me].mkv
\\<nas-xx-xx-xx>\Movies\Stand By Me (1986)\Stand By Me (1986) [The Summer of Stand By Me].mkv

For TV shows you need to inlcude season and episode aswell. See link above. After adapting directory and file names accordingly, all the correct thumbnails show up. If you included mulitple files, Plex will show the number of files in a small blue field in the thumbnail.

After talking to other NAS owners and reading up on the issue on the Internet, I found that the most pragmatic way to digitalize and play movies is the following:

    • Buy a media player that supports .mkv and .iso files.

    • Connect the media player to your TV and your home network.

    • Create .mkv or .iso file(s) and store them on you NAS

    • Use the NAS as a network share that you access from your media player.

That's an old version of Plex Media Server. You may find a newer version works better for you.

Went to https://plex.tv/downloads, selected the "NAS" button and the "Netgear" tab. For ReadyNAS 516 with Intel Core i3 3.3 GHz Dual Core CPU, do I choose Intel 4.x or Intel 6.x?

    Are there installation instructions somewhere?

    RN516 runs OS6, so choose Intel 6.x.

Intel 4.x is for the older x86-based devices (like the Pro and Ultra) that run OS4.

Take a look at recent threads on the Plex sub-forum for the ReadyNAS for instructions.
  • If you are a PlexPass subscriber, you may also have more joy by visiting the thread: https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/topic/ ... d-working/

Why? Up until this repackaging, the ReadyNAS OS 6 packages came in pairs... "ros6" and "ros6-binaries", which had to be applied together. This made it difficult for many to upgrade using the FrontView web UI. So if you're PlexPass then go grab this alternative version. If not, you may have some difficulty until the new 0.9.9.0 build is generally released.
  • If I understand you correctly, from 0.9.9.0 onwards, we only need one file anymore? That would be great, because I think there is a lot of confusion on this, judging by posts in the Plex and ReadyNAS fora.

I'm not a PlexPass subscriber, so I am not allowed to view that page. But after some trial and error, managed to install the new version from the 2 files, with the help of Plex forum items like these:
