Pro 6 ghost space

Hey folks -

I began putting my new ReayNAS Pro 6 (diskless) unit online today.

The system shipped with 4.2.15 installed, and I got the unit setup and on the network as such.

I upgraded the firmware up to 4.2.22, and then went ahead and did a factory default.

Now that the system is up, and the volume has resync'd, I have discovered something odd.

The system currently has (4) 1TB Seagate ST1000NM0011 drives in X-RAID2 w/ 2 parity. The volume is reporting 47GB (2%) of 1846GB used. Hence the issue.

There is NOTHING on this thing yet. What is consuming the 47GB of space?

I can upload logs or something if anyone knows what to look for.

Any ideas out there?

  • That is a great question.

When I initially started the system up the first time, running the 4.2.15 code, I did actually set aside some snapshot space. I can't exactly recall how much I set. Might have been 50G.

When I realized there was a significant FW update, I loaded the 4.2.22 code, as I mentioned, and then did a factory reset.

On all of my subsequent factory defaults, I have not configured any snapshot space. Decided against it.

Is there something getting left behind on the disks? Seemed like the jump away from the 4.2.15 code was fairly significant (intro of ext4 file system maybe?).

I might just take each disk out, run a boot-n-nuke on them, and then rebuild again.
  • This has to be a Front View bug.

I have factory defaulted, chose the "erase disks" option, spent the 3 hours letting the system erase the disks, and then started over fresh.

The system has come back online, X-RAID2 w/ 2 parity, no snapshot space. It is currently resync'ing, and here's what I see.

The OLED display on the front of the unit says "C: 1.8/1.8T free"

In RAIDar, when I hover over the volume icon for the unit it says:
    "Volume C: RAID Level X2, Resync 6.6% complete, Time to finish 6 hr 4 min, Speed 40MB/sec; 204MB (0%) of 1846MB used"

However, Front View says 2% is used, or 47GB. When I hover over the volume icon in Front View, it says:
"Volume C: RAID Level X2, Resync, 47 GB (2%) of 1846 GB used"

    Has anyone seen this issue?

    Any help appreciated.

  • No thoughts or ideas out there?

I guess the days of the engineers @ Infrant and then Netgear roaming around these forums are long gone?

Ah, the good old days ... one of the things that drew me to this product line 6 years ago when I bought my first NV. Thing has ran like a champ for a long time, short of a power supply replacement.

What is the Netgear support experience like? Anyone care to comment?

I guess I'm trying to decide if this 47GB of ghost space consumption is worth my time and energy on the phone with Netgear support.

Thanks as always to this valuable community tool, the forum and the healthy community of folks who love this product and want to continue to see it succeed!
