Pro pioneer 2TB -> 3TB disks
Is it possible to online swap 2TB disks for 3TB disks (or 4TB :-)) yet ? I seem to recall having to factory default when swapping to larger disks, I'd need a 2nd NAS to be able to store all the data ...

Partly true,
If RAID6 is not not a suitable backup then tell us what is? Tape doesn't last forever(but at least it only loses linear data), spare HDD still have the issue of how often are they replicated, if they are all stored on site then lets hope the site doesn't get burned down or the data storage devices stolen. If you want to Rsync then you still need another site with hardware that can fail and most of all....
Try getting old parts for the early readynas that were made like mine or any old tape storage device. The best solution is to be constantly upgrading your backup solution, whatever that may be.
I was burned mostly by ReadyNAS listing on the HCL hardware that was not compatible which has since been removed. I have not lost my data but I have lost weeks of my time restoring data from HDD manually in a custom built RAID array, not to mention the thousands of dollars in HDD's.
Oh BTW Gold DVD's are supposed to be doing really well if all you want is precious family photos.
