I'm having the same problems as noted by superandrea. So I logged in via SSH and attempted a backup using rsync. It copied a few files, then gave the following errors. I have no idea what they mean.
rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes to socket [sender]: Broken pipe (32)
rsync: write failed on "/USB/USB_HDD_4/Photos/DSCN1007.JPG": Input/output error (5)
rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at receiver.c(322) [receiver=3.0.9]
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (2175 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(605) [sender=3.0.9]
Edit: Problem solved! I'm using a 2.5 HDD and I was powering it with a single USB cable. Once I plugged in the Y-cable to give it more power, everything works fine.
