Problems printing with OS X Lion and 4.1.18 ***SOLVED***
I've read and read all the workarounds to get my Canon MP530 printer via my NV+'s print spoller to work under Lion. I've tried every configuration of drivers and "tricks" to get the printer to talk to me, but as of now, it can't. I even tried Christian's CUPS workaround, but even that doesn't work. All I need is is my printer fixed, but it;s sure coming with a healthy dose of printer drivers and spooler methodology :)
Before this time, connecting my printer to my NV+'s spooler was very easy. I just use the NV+ as a print server for my non-network-aware Canon MP530, load the printer drivers, setup the NAS, and away I go. At least that's the way it's been since Snow Leopard. But now, no matter whether I try the "Windows User" sneakaround or the "CUPS" full-bruntal assault, I always come up with:
Printer Ready
Unable to get printer status
"Printer Ready" depends on which of the various backdoors that I try to set up the print driver. I've long ago upgraded to 4.1.8, thinking that my old 4.1.8-T9 was the problem. Nope :) The strange thing is that my HP Photosmart Pro B9180's working great, and that's to be expected since it's a network-ready printer. But I really don't relish spending $3/sheet on a satin sheen copy of an email :)
Can any of you kind souls here help me out? I'm really ready to jump off the deep end here.
Thanks.
Michael

- axelloAspirantThanks for the solution! I can now also shutdown my old G5 and use the ReadyNAS for spooling.
The URL that worked for me was also with a @ instead of a /smb://username:password@192.168.x.x/hp_LaserJet_
Axel Roest - mrmouseAspirantI've read this threat with interest, as I too lost the ability to print on my network when I upgraded to Lion. I've followed the suggestions offered here, but it took me a long while to work out what the username and password settings for my smb connection were... in the end I realised it was Guest and password (or, presumably more correctly, any string for password). Got there in the end - but it seems strange that there's no fixed solution to this, leading users to get into more detailed configuration settings... Anyway, thanks to all who have offered solutions here. :)
- campbellcjAspirantHi, I have been suffering from this issue as well since upgrading to Lion. My Canon iP6000D worked fine on the ReadyNAS Duo previously with Snow Leopard and still works fine from Windows 7 (on a PC). The tips above using either the GUI setup as a Windows printer, or CUPS, works to some degree. However with the Canon/Apple driver it hangs on "sending print data" and with the Gutenprint driver it prints but with massive distortion (everything is double sized, skewed, etc.)
Is this a printer driver problem or what? I tried the built-in and Gutenprint iP6600D drivers as well but no improvement. - campbellcjAspirantAha! Out of desperation I figured I would try the Gutenprint 5.2.7 driver instead of the 5.2.8-pre1 version, and voila it works.
So be warned that some of the 5.2.8 drivers apparently don't work!!! And of course the built-in Apple/Canon driver doesn't work either! - tc60045AspirantAny way to solve this WITHOUT enabling SMB? I prefer only NFS but have acquiesced to allow AFP on my ReadyNAS. SMB = a bridge too far (no windows, not ever).
TC - rsinsheimerAspirantIf I might be so bold, is there any chance the folks at Netgear could actually fix this? I'm trying to add my wife's new laptop to our previously Windows-centric network universe and the printer just won't work.
- 3dsqAspirant"Unable to get printer status" with my HP Photosmart 7960 attached to my ReadyNAS Duo. I had configured this previously under Bonjour using Snow Lion but when I upgraded to Mountain Lion I would get the error message above. Tried deleting and re-adding the printer under Bonjour using system Preferences. In the end what worked for me was to find the printer using the Windows tab of the add printer sequence instead of using Bonjour, then select the usual printer driver from the list provided by Apple. No username or password, and no CUPS changes were needed.
- rsinsheimerAspirantJust to second the above statement -- connecting to a Bonjour-advertised printer is still broken in 4.1.19, but you can get to the printer through the Windows path.

ScuseMe wrote: My printer definition now becomes smb://username:password/192.168.#.#/ . Replace with your NAS's IP, of course :)
Since my spooler name is Canon_MP530, my entire printer network path name is:
smb://username:password/192.168.#.#/Canon_MP530
I have a HP color laserjet, and was following these rules; the username:password/NASip did not work for me; CUPS told me "invalid address"
Later posts talk about doing username:password@NASip - this doesn't give me an error, but it won't actually take. - rloseyAspirant
Javerre wrote: This worked for me, with the slight proviso that the SMB path should read:
smb://user:pass@server/queue
Note that an @ sign, not a /, is required. Also, I had to select the Gutenprint driver form my Canon Pixma printer, or it would hang sending the data to the printer. Good job, ScuseMe
Alas, everytime I print anything, I get the dreaded "Authentication required" -- when I enter a NAS username and password it prints. I think the problem is that a bad user and password has been saved in the keyring -- is there a way to adjust or delete or otherwise fix this?
