Protected Share not accessible - Windows Explorer
Hi all,
So i'm a total noob to NAS storage and its devices but I cannot get my user protected shares to work in Windows Explorer on Windows 8.1. So I created a user with a username and password and then assigned this user to a read-only share under CIFS (no guest access) under the write-enabled users section.
Now, when I attempt to map this in Windows Explorer, and use the corresponding credentials, Windows tells me that this share isn't accessable? If I enabled guest access I can connect fine with no issues. I cannot find a solution and have tried everything under the sun.
Anyone have any solutions?

- EskenderNGNETGEAR Employee RetiredHello,
Are the usernames of the ReadyNAS user and the Windows user identical? If so, please try your set-up again with different credentials and see if this works.
Have you selected read-only as the default access for that share? This should be set if you are restricting access to specific users.
Also, if anyone with an account on the ReadyNAS shall be able to access this share you can configure the system differently. Please head again to the CIFS related section in frontview that you mentioned before. There, instead of selecting read-only from the Default Access drop-down list, select the access given to anyone who can access your share (not a hundred percent sure how this option is named and unfortunately I cannot check at the moment).
Bye,

I have tried both of your suggested solutions but none worked sadly.StephenB wrote: What firmware are you running? 4.1.x or 5.x.x?
I'm running 4.1.X - RXLuminary@nbsimmo:
Just to isolate the problem, have you tried using another PC/laptop that is running in Windows 8.1 or any Windows OS?
Have you tried using Windows Credential Manager?
Have you tried to uncheck/recheck CIFS?
Haave you tried using other protocols like FTP? - StephenBGuru - Experienced User@nbsimmo:
Your settings seem right, at least per an old Netgear KB article. Your settings are the same as "Setup B", correct?Setup A: Specific users have read/write access; guest users have read-only access. - From the Default access drop-down, select Read-only. This will prevent other users or anonymous users from editing or deleting items on the share.
Enable the "Write-enabled users" checkbox and enter a user or group name in the associated textbox.
Enable the "Allow guest access" checkbox to allow anonymous users to login to the share.
Setup B: Specific users have read/write access; no guest users allowed to access share.- From the Default access drop-down, select Read-only. This will prevent other users or anonymous users from editing or deleting items on the share.
Enable the "Write-enabled users" checkbox and enter a user or group name in the associated textbox.
Disable the "Allow guest access" checkbox to prevent anonymous users from logging into the share.
Setup C: Specific computers have read/write access, regardless of user.- From the Default access drop-down, select Read/write. This will grant permission to users to edit or delete items on the share.
Enable the Hosts allowed access checkbox and type the IP address that is allowed to access the share. This option restricts access to the share to the computer associated with that IP address.
Disable the "Allow guest access" checkbox to prevent anonymous users from logging into the share.
Have you tried resetting the underlying file permissions (which are different from the share permissions)? Generally you want to set the file permissions to grant everyone permission, and restrict access using the setups above.
So try going into the "advanced options" tab (far upper right) and set- Share folder owner: nobody
Share folder group: nogroup
Share folder owner rights: read/write
Share folder group rights: read/write
Share folder everyone rights: read/write
Check the two checkboxes directly underneath- Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share...
Grant rename and delete privileges to non-owner of files.
Then click apply (lower right). The checkbox next to "set ownership" will clear, and ownership is reset as a background task. There will be a pop-up when it completes.
