Pull drives, into newer ReadyNAS
Hello ReadyNAS users,
My hard drives out live the power supplies on my NASes...
I have 2 ReadyNAS NV+ (RND4000). I bought one, the power supply failed under warranty and I moved the drives into another while waiting for the refurbished unit to come back.
The replacement system just started showing signs of power supply degradation, same behaviour as the 1st unit did before complete failure, so I swapped the drives back and life is good again however I am worried that if the original unit fails for any reason, I can't go back to my spare and I don't see the silver RND 4000s in the shops anymore. Up to now, I've been extremely lucky.
Is it possible to pull the RAIDed drives out and put them into a newer black or dark grey ReadyNASes and expect them to work?
If so which are compatible..?
If I end up stuck with drives and nothing to read them, what is the file system on the ReadyNAS..? zfs..? xfs..? ext(1,2,3)..? something proprietary...?
I am attempting several other backup solutions for my data also (rsync, USB drives, etc)...
Cheers,
Regan

No. The NV+ v2 uses an arm processor, your v1 uses a sparc processor. The operating system (stored on the disks) is not compatible. If you try this, you will probably end up with wiped disk drives (a empty data volume).regan wrote: Is it possible to pull the RAIDed drives out and put them into a newer black or dark grey ReadyNASes and expect them to work?
ext. Though you do need to deal with the RAID as well. There is a guide on mounting the disks in an x86 linux system here: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=306regan wrote: If I end up stuck with drives and nothing to read them, what is the file system on the ReadyNAS..? zfs..? xfs..? ext(1,2,3)..? something proprietary...?
That is better than attempting to recover data after failure. Even if the drives are healthy, failures can corrupt the file system.regan wrote: I am attempting several other backup solutions for my data also (rsync, USB drives, etc)... - regan1AspirantOkay thanks, that link is especially useful if things go really bad.
I think whatever NAS solution I buy in future I think I will get two of them and do a periodic rsync.
I am making multiple copies of everything on separate USB drives, then I will just move everything to a brand new solution.
SPARC was a weird choice. I was all for register windows and stuff but you rarely see SPARC outside of radio telescopes and huge SUN servers.
ARM is everywhere these days.
