questions about recently acquired ReadyNAS

The list of approved drives clearly shows 2TB as the maximum approved for your model. There are no higher capacity drives in the list.
It is not in the manual as the manual does not refer to things such as this. However GPT support is not available on the Duo v1. Read up on MBR GPT and 3TB drives and you will find why GPT support is necessary to support drives with larger capacity.
On the hardware compatibility list page for hard disks select Legacy and then in another box that will then show select ReadyNAS Duo. Be sure to select ReadyNAS Duo not ReadyNAS Duo v2. The v2 is a very different model.
