If you are trying to format the disks and you do not care about the data stored to the volume or there is no data, you may factory reset the NAS. Factory reset will definitely format all the disks that are inserted to the NAS to the ReadyNAS file system format which will not only delete the current settings but will also wipe out all the data.

Of course the perform factory default control on the settings menu does the same thing - and is a bit easier than messing with the boot menu.
