Well the new 6.8.0 beta firmware did not change anything. but was worth a try. the defrag job ran for 13 hours and 35 minites according to the SSH session i had open running "top". i have disable everything i could find to bring the memory footprint down that services were using. so now i am looking at what it will take to modify the settings in the OS/Application to allow defrag to run with reduced resources needs.
does someone know what applicaiton is being used to run the defrag? is it BTRFS? and any commands that i can use to attempt a manual running of the defrag application?
thank you.

Have you tried disabling the quota accounting from the volume settings?
- BofcJul 25, 2017Aspirant
as far as i can tell i do not have quotas set up anywhere, i have also disabled snapshots. bit-rot protection, compression, and encryption is on.
is there a quota service to check or simply looking in the GUI to show that quota in not enabled all that is needed to verify it is off?
- jak0lantashJul 25, 2017MentorHaving no quotas set on shares doesn't mean having BTRFS quota support disabled at the volume level. Check under the settings of the volume, there is a checkbox for it.

at the volume level the "quota" check box is not checked.
