Re-synch loop following disk replacement(support #23334325)

Hi All,

I have a Readynas Ultra 6 with 6 x 2TB drives inside. Running latest firmware (4.2.26 as of Jan 14 2014).

Configuration was
Disk 1 - Seagate ST32000542AS
Disk 2 - Seagate ST32000542AS
Disk 3 - WDC WS20EFRX
Disk 4 - Seagate ST32000542AS
Disk 5 - Seagate ST32000542AS
Disk 6 - Seagate ST32000542AS

Recently disk 2 started to report increasing ATA errors. So on Friday I swapped it out with a new Western Digital WD20EFRX (Red Edition). I hot swapped it and it recognised the new disk, tested it, and began the resynch. Hapy days, I thought. That was Friday noon.

On Saturday morning I got an email to say that:

"RAID sync finished on volume C. The array is still in degraded mode, however. This can be caused by a disk sync failure or failed disks in a multi-parity disk array."

I checked on Raidar and it showed all 6 disks as green. However when I opened up FrontView it showed Disk 1 failed, and Disk 2 (the one I replaced) as 'Spare'. I was able to open up the shares in explorer but responses were really slow. The display on the front of the NAS shows 5.x TB out of 9.x TB used, which is correct. Started looking around and over the next 15 mins both explorer and frontview/Raidar became unresponsive. So I powered the unit off.

Upon powering on again all 6 disks were detected. Raidar shows disk 1 is fine (albeit with around 6 ATA errors). The NAS then proceeds to rebuild disk 2 again. During the synch process access was fine (to files and raidar, etc). At the end of the process on Sunday it again showed Disk 1 as failed and disk 2 as spare. Again the unit was not fully responsive. So I powered it off again.

Does anyone know what happened here? I have been looking back in the forum and it seems some people have had issues with these WD red series disks. Do you think there is something wrong with the new WD drive?
I am thinking to put the old disk back (a Seagate Barracuda) and see if disk 2 can successfully re-synch. Does anyone have any concerns about doing so?

Thanks in advance for your help! :D

Sat Jun 7 10:55:32 HKT 2014 RAID sync finished on volume C. The array is still in degraded mode, however. This can be caused by a disk sync failure or failed disks in a multi-parity disk array.
Fri Jun 6 14:16:52 HKT 2014 RAID sync started on volume C.
Fri Jun 6 13:52:04 HKT 2014 Data volume will be rebuilt with disk 2.
Fri Jun 6 13:49:53 HKT 2014 New disk detected. If multiple disks have been added, they will be processed one at a time. Please do not remove any added disk(s) during this time. [Disk 2]
Fri Jun 6 13:46:31 HKT 2014 The disk on channel 2 has failed. The NAS will automatically shutdown in 30 minutes to prevent possible data loss resulting from additional failed drives.
Fri Jun 6 13:46:23 HKT 2014 If the failed disk is used in a RAID level 1, 5, or X-RAID volume, please note that volume is now unprotected, and an additional disk failure may render that volume dead. If this disk is a part of a RAID 6 volume, your volume is still protected if this is your first failure. A 2nd disk failure will make your volume unprotected. If this disk is a part of a RAID 10 volume, your volume is still protected if more than half of the disks alive. But another failure of disks been marked may render that volume dead. It is recommended that you replace the failed disk as soon as possible to maintain optimal protection of your volume.
Fri Jun 6 13:46:23 HKT 2014 Disk failure detected.
Fri Jun 6 13:46:17 HKT 2014 A disk was removed from the ReadyNAS. One or more RAID volumes are currently unprotected, and an additional disk failure or removal may result in data loss. Please add a replacement disk as soon as possible.
Fri Jun 6 13:46:17 HKT 2014 Disk removal detected. [Disk 2]
Fri Jun 6 13:45:56 HKT 2014 Detected increasing reallocated sector count[2327] on disk 2 [ST32000542AS, 5XW1HMZA] 32 times in the past 30 days. This often indicates an impending failure. Please be prepared to replace this disk to maintain data redundancy.
Fri Jun 6 13:42:36 HKT 2014 System is up.

Contact support. Don't try resolving this yourself. Wait for their advice.
  • Thanks. I have emailed them(support case 23334325).

So you thinks it's serious then, as you suggest to contact support?

There might be multiple disks with issues. Your volume capacity suggests that your volume only had single-redundancy.

Do you have an up to date backup?
  • Unfortunately not. Guess I should copy some stuff off of it while it's synching then.
  • Hi all,

Just to update this case for future reference.

The problem was that disc 1 had some problem, even though it was not reporting as such (in fact it reported no errors at all). When I swapped out disk two, the resynch would get to 90% complete and then fail due to disc one issues.

Anyway I had to get level 3 support to remotely assist and they rebuilt the array with the original 6 discs, then we swapped out disk 2 and resynch manually then swapped out disk one and resynch normally, no data was lost. Cost me USD 200 but, hey what could I do!
