These kinds of issues are usually following the same steps:
- Identify what's filling up the 4GB root volume.
- Remove the data that shouldn't be there (either delete/move to data volume)
- make config changes/firmware update (if needed) to stop it from filling up again for the same reason
- check for config corruption (can happen if the root volume gets full)
- verify it comes back up fine after reboot. If not check again to find out why that didn't happen and fix further issues.
In extreme cases formatting the 4GB root volume might be needed and there's another set of steps to do that properly.
It booting into safe mode would seem to suggest that the 4GB root volume might be completely full or can't get mounted for some other reason or there's some other issue leading to the RAID not being mountable.
The chat support team you're speaking to would be level 2. Advanced Level 2 (possibly), Level 3 or maybe even engineering (though there'd have to be a widespread issue or more serious issues encountered for it to get up that high) would be needed to attempt to fix a full root volume.
In safe mode you can enable Secure Diagnostic Mode under System > Settings > Support (especially useful if the NAS is at a remote site) or you could boot back to tech support mode for them to have another look. Either way would work for them.

Hi,
It appears to be going into safe mode because the "installed disks contain an existing ReadyNAS installation that failed to start properly"
Booting into read-only mode, I can see the data.
According to the volume.log, the root volume is no longer full.
I'm afraid of doing anything myself as I've already tried OS install, and I can see my data. It's 13TB. The most important stuff is backed up, but it would be highly inconvenient to have to start over.
I'll continue to get someone that can help, but it feels like they are somewhat unfamiliar. It's hard to do this over chat. At this point, I'm almost willing to get paid support, but even that seems hard to get. Last year I had a contract (that has since expired) and received some excellent assistance. Can't seem to find those folks this time.

I suspect you'd need level 3 support, so you might ask via chat how to get that.
