Ready Nas Duo failure

I have a Ready NAS Duo. On the bottom it states v2 but it does not say this on the front panel so reading other posts I am confused what version I have.

Last week I had a series of powercuts. When I re-started the Ready NAS again it powered up very noisily and failed to quieten down. It does not boot up but it just flashes / blinks. The blue Power, and green disk 1 and 2 all blink 3 times quickly, then disk 1 blinks twice more slowly, which I understand to be 'No drives detected'. The LAN light does not light up at all and the unit is not detected in RAIDar.

My question is, is this more likly to be a fault with the ReadyNAS or the drives? If I buy another ReadyNAS box and put my drives in it is this likly to recover my data, or will a different box want to reformat the drives as a first step, so I loose all the data? Although I do use the drive for backup, I mainly use it for media storage and it has a lot of music which I could re load eventualy, and some historic videos recovered from old cine film which is not replaceable. The drive was configured as a mirrored RAID array.

I have read about using software to try and read the drives but I dont feel competent to try this without damaging them, and I use a Mac, not a PC so not sure they will be compatable. Should I just send the drives off to a data recovery company and get them to sort it?

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You have the original Duo (called a v1 here).

    Correct.

It could be either (or even both if there was a power surge), so it is hard to say.

Try powering down the NAS, and removing both disks.  Label them by slot number as you remove them.  Then power it up again diskless, and see if the RAIDar still can't find the NAS.

If RAIDar does find it, then power down again and try inserting disk 2 in slot 2.  Power up, and see if the NAS boots.  If it does, then immediately copy off your data.  If it still detects no disks, then power down and remove disk 2.

I think you kind of already know the best answer here.  Since you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, then using a data recovery company is probably your best option.

If you have a friend who is more technical and has a Windows PC, then you could ask the friend if they are willing to help.  We can provide more information here if that would be useful to them.

If you are thinking a used NAS, then you'd have to be careful to get another v1 box.

If you were to purchase a new ReadyNAS, then paid Netgear support could help you temporarily mount your disks - I don't believe this is free.  This support could lead to Netgear's data recovery service.  Note Netgear doesn't support any used NAS, so you'd have to purchase the NAS new from an authorized reseller.  One issue here is that there isn't much inventory out there, and prices for new ReadyNAS are very high.

Unfortunately, you've learned that RAID isn't enough to keep your data safe.   I hope you can recover it - if you do, then make sure you maintain backups of your data on more than one device.

If you do decide on a used NAS, either a DuoV1 or NV/NV+ V1 will work for you.  The rackmount 1000 and 1100 should, too, but most desktop users aren't really looking for a noisy rack-mount one.  Several sellers on eBay are as confused as you as to what unit they have.  If the front lable isn't visible in the photos, look at the rear and compare it to yours.  The V2 looks very different from the back.

Thanks Sandshark, it's confusing but I have ordered a used unit from eBay which appears the same as mine so will see how I get on.

Thank you StephenB for your response.

I have tried all options with and without drives in the base unit and there is no change in the result of the device so I am leaning towards the fact that the base unit is dead. I also had one old drive from a previous RAID instalation before I upgraded to the current drives and that gives the same non responsive result.

I have ordered a used but working ReadyNAS (same version as mine) from eBay and will try the drives in this when it arrives.
