Rsync is a good protocol for this, but how to use it for a local disk isn't explained in the manual. So you could read this also: http://readynas.sphardy.com/2011/04/backing-up-via-rsync-to-local-usb-disk_9153.html
Another option is to connect the drive to your mac (reformatting again :smileyfrustrated: ), and doing the backup over ethernet. That is actually faster, but does require the PC to be running.

Do you have a backup? Might be a good time to make one.
Odds are you have a filling OS partition. If you have SSH enabled and are ok with linux commands you could confirm that (and likely fix it).

Likely it isn't enabled if you don't know. There's an add-on for the NAS that allows you to access the NAS using ssh, giving you a low-level command line interface to the linux operating system.
If you have a backup, you can do a factory default on the NAS which will wipe the disks and do a fresh factory install. You'd then set up the NAS again and restore the data from the backup.
Another option is to contact Netgear support at my.netgear.com and ask about per-incident (paid) support.

After backing up much of my files overnight my NAS is now at rest. Frontview is again reading both drives as operating normally. The LEDs look fine (the green blinks unevenly at about 24 times a minute and both disk lights are steady on). I have not tried to turn off the unit so I don't know if the will work this time. Of course, as I haven't rebooted after updating the firmware, I don't know if it took or not. I'm wondering if I should uninstall the 4.1.15 update and reinstall the old 4.1.14 version and try to turn back the clock. Your thoughts?
