ReadyNAS 104 antivirus turning itself off
Hi all,
Weird one: the real-time scaning antivirus keeps turning itself off on my ReadyNAS 104 (running 6.9.3). I usually notice because the virus definitions stop been updated and I get a yell...

Unfortunately the RN100 series doesn't have as much memory as newer OS-6 ReadyNAS. Upgrading the NAS to an RN214 or RN424 would solve the issue, and would also let you do some real-time transcoding with plex. Though of course it would cost.
If you have quota turned on in the volume settings tab, you can try turning that off - it might help. You might also turn off other services on the NAS that you aren't using (no need for AFP if you don't have a Mac, etc).
But you might have to choose between Plex and ClamAV on the NAS. It is possible to use a PC to host Plex (but keep the media on the NAS), and you could also shift to an Antivirus program running on a PC that is configured to scan network shares.
Another thing you can look into is using ReadyDLNA instead of Plex. It doesn't have all the features that Plex has, but it uses less memory.

Nov 04, 2018Hi BP71, please let know whether you still observe this issue with 6.9.4 installed.

Hi, thanks both for the replies.
The issue is still there, AV was off since 31/10/18 when I checked this morning, first time it happened since 6.9.4 Hotfix 1 has been installed, but it seems to happen less frequently (AV stayed on for 9 days after the installation of the hotfix).
I just had a look at the logs and in kernel.log there is an "Out of memory: Kill process 28849 (clamd)" entry on the day the AV stopped working, appearing right after several entries regarding the Plex app (by chance or is there a link?). See log extracts below :

Well, the faithful dog protected itself against worse things happening by shutting down clamav, as I perceive it. I had an RN104 for 5 years (together with an RN204) and felt it getting weaker and weaker with each and every firmware upgrade up to 6.9.4 before replacing both by a more powerful system (RN426).
If you can afford, turn off Antivirus, which will improve behaviour of your box.
In case you would like to get more hints on improving performance and stability of RN104 in general you might want to follow the link below.
