I've tried to boot in Normal, Factory default, and OS Re-install modes with a spare disk and getting the same error in the LCD (http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20898/~/readynas--accessing-the-boot-menu). The Memory test mode does work.
Regarding the boot from the USB, at least I've downloaded the image for ARM, but I don't know how I missed the Sparc part, it is clearly visible. Fortunately, it didn't seem to do anything.
