ReadyNAS 104 or NV+ v2?

I currently have a ReadyNAS NV+ (v1) which i'm considering upgrading to something that supports a faster SATA spec (since the v1 only has SATA 1, it's a tad slow these days...).

I'm curious to the opinions of which NAS I should go for?

I know the 104 is never, and Intel based... but is it worth the extra cost over an NV+ v2?

Thoughts welcomed :)

RN104 is newer, but is also ARM based. RN3xx and RN516 are intel (and quite a bit more expensive).

You can make a case for choosing the older ultra or pro over the new RN1xx/RN3xx/RN5xx lines, esp. if you can find a good deal as inventory is being drained. You get a dated-looking UI, but a lot of features and good performance.

But I wouldn't get an NV+ v2 (or a Duo v2) unless I already had one and needed another NAS with identical features. The cost difference is negligible (in fact the RN104 is slightly cheaper on Amazon at the moment). The v2 went to end-of-life very quickly, so the firmware isn't nearly as mature as the x86 or v1 lines.

BTW, the issue with your v1 is not the SATA-I spec. SATA-II is needed for SSD, but mechanical disks simply aren't fast enough to saturate even SATA-I. The v1 has a quite slow sparc processor, and that is the reason it is so much slower than the newer models. So when you look at newer NAS, don't worry about the SATA spec - it is not important.

You will find that the RN104 is quite a bit faster than your NV+ v1, but slower than an ultra (or RN3xx) product.

Ah, my bad - I saw the "Marvel" chipset and assumed it was Intel based.

The UI doesn't bother me at all. I'll take a look at pricing for the Ultras and Pros. I was hoping to spend around £250, but might stretch higher for something that is going to give better performance.

Thanks for the input - it's very appreciated. I'm definitely going to look for a good deal on a 4 bay Ultra I think.

    Cheers.
  • Hi,

and we have a NV+ (v1) with 4 x 1TB. Now we need more capacity. The question is, should we change the hard disk through bigger (4 x 2TB) or buy the new model from Readynas?

    How faster Stephen? ;-)
We are small office with two people. We are working much with big photos. In the future we want works with videos, too. The problem is, that now (with 1GBit) it take long time to show any photos. If we buy 104 (or RN3xx?), will we solve our issue?

    Thank You in advance.

Large file read speeds on the NV+ are around 20-25 MB/s. With the RN104, the read speeds are around 85 MB/s. Writes are slower (~50 MB/sec).

In your case I am thinking the RN314 might be better. Large file reads are ~100 MB/s, but more importantly, writes are also ~100 MB/s. Smaller file access and directory reads are also considerably faster than the RN104.

I'd go for the RN314 if you can afford it.
