ReadyNas 104 tries to boot to USB and fails.

I have a Read NAS RN104 and it doesn't when it powers on it tries to boot to USB and fails.

I went through the USB recovery and it boots into the USB and says "DEBUG: telnet" Then an IP address.

If I take the USB stick out it goes back to failing to boot to USB.

RAIDar can find the NAS when it has booted from the USB, but it says that the model is "None", serial is "N0NE000~", Status in "Tech Support Mode", and debud code is "TELNET Mode". When it hasn't booted to the USB RAIDar can't find it.

I'm not too worried about getting the unit working but I am wanting to get the data from the drives.

Do I have any options other that finding someone with another 4+ bay Readynas using OS6 I can purchase or borrow?

Can I install OS6 in a VM and mount the drives that way?

Can I reinstall OS6 on my 104?

Can I just plug the drives into another NAS (like truenas or unraid) and mount the drives and recover the data that way?

I don't fancy having to send the drives to a data recovery specialist.

Try accessing the NAS using Telnet.  If you are using a windows PC, I suggest you use the Putty client for that.

    https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/

Make sure you select "telnet" as the protocol.

When you connect to the NAS, log in as root.  The password is infr8ntdebug.

Once logged in, enter these commands.

    rnutil chroot
    lsblk

If lsblk works, then post the output here, and we can proceed with attempting to manually mount your data volume.

What firmware was the NAS running before the failure?

Did you notice the update instructions here:

ReadyNAS 102, 104, and 2120 systems must not be updated directly to 6.10.x from 6.3.x or older firmware. They must first be updated to either 6.2.5 or 6.3.5, then to 6.5.2, and then to 6.10.x.
