Readynas 104/10400 won't boot
Hey guys! I am in desperate need of a night in shinining armor or a geek with mad computer skills will probably suit me better :)
Some years ago i bought a netgear RN 10400 for my father and set up a raid 5 for him with 4 x 4TB disks. It has been working like a charm until now. Before I go into the technical details, let me just say that this poor guy has been storing all his pictures, videos (he loves that video cam) for several year. Believe me, there A LOT of precios data here that he does not have backup of.
He had one USB HDD that he had saved the most important stuff to, but he just found out that this died :(
Well, lets get down to the problem.
The nas won't boot!
Error message: Boot from USB failed!
This guy does not know what a firmware update is and he surely doesn't know how to access the NAS to do a fw-update, so how this happened, I have no idea. He was just trying to access a share one day and it was in this condition.
What I have tried:
1. Tried making bootable recovery sticks with Netgear Storage USB Recovery Utility.
I did not know which OS he was on but obviously I picked Marvell (os6) since this was the only valid option for RN104.
I used the 6.10.2-arm.img Didn't know what version he was on, but it sure as hell wasn't a downgrade (I know that can mess things up). Iv'e tried with 5 diffrent types of USB sticks, and the result is the same on everyone:
I pull the power (it is no longer possible to shut down by tapping the power button - it's stuck) holding the backup button whil I plug in the power with the USB stick connected. It boot's up from USB succefully but after 20 seconds - 3 minutes I get this error message: DEBUG: TELNET 192.168.1.84 Iv'e read in a guide that some sticks won't work with the readynas, so that's why I have been trying several diffrent ones, but with no luck. If i restart the nas with no stick, I get error message Boot from USB failed! again.
2. I have tried booting up in boot mode by pressing and holding the backup button while powering up, but same error message: Boot from USB failed!
3. I wanted to try the guide below, but I as I mentioned earlier, the power button seems stuck, no flashses when I press it. Also tried connecting to the ip below, with no luck:
1. Hold Power for 3 flashes 2. Telnet 192.168.168.168 3. Loginusername: root
password: infr8ntdebug
4. Ive tried running raidar, and it states that the nas is in telnet mode. I can't connect to it via it's assigned IP adress.
5. I have tried googling and looking through tons of stuff, but the possible solutions pretty much comes down to the things I have mentioned above.
I myself also have a readynas, NV v2 4-bay. so my question is: What if i power off the RN 10400, carefull pick out the 4 drives and mark them with numbers 1-4, insert them in my NV v2 (which have an intact and working OS, also with a Raid 5 setup)
will I be able to access the data ? I do NOT want to try this if this means I will risk loosing/wiping data on the disks and render it unrecoverable. I am at a stage that this option is the only one I got left, in addition to reaching out to you guys. Netgear support ended about a half year ago.
I have read some articles about the possibility of taking the disks out and connecting them to a pc to try to access the data that way, but it seems like this option is recomended by people trying to sell their own software. Doesn't look like a good option tbh.
Forgot to mention that the light on the power button and on the backup button are blinking fast constantly.
I will be forever grateful to you if you can help me solve this. The data on the disk must be intact surely, it's "just" about finding a way to access the data.
Thank you in advance!

Can you boot it up in tech support mode? Uuse the intructions on pages 28-29 here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/READYNAS-100/ReadyNAS_%20OS6_Desktop_HM_EN.pdf
Note the "hold power for 3 flashes" isn't the process for getting into tech support mode for the RN104.
If that works, try using paid support (via my.netgear.com). Don't sign up for gearhead - what you want is per-incident support.

StephenB Thanks so much for your reply.
I am not familiar with telnet, or have to access the data/nas through telnet at all. When the nas is powered on and receiving an ip adress I can't connect to 192.168.168.168.
To be able to access the Tech support mode, I need to start the Boot Menu, Which I just can't find a way to do.
See The instructions below
To access the boot menu:
1. Power off your storage system.
2. Using a straightened paper clip, press and hold the Reset button.
3. Press the Power button.
The system powers on.
4. Continue to press the Reset button until the status display screen shows a boot menu message.
5. Press the Backup button to scroll through boot mode options.
The status display screen shows the current boot mode option.
6. When the status display screen shows the boot mode that you need, press and release the Reset button
to confirm your boot menu selection.
The system boots in the selected boot mode. The problem is that I can not use the power button to shut the Nas down. I need to pull the plug to be able to shut it down, and I need to put in the plug to be able to turn it on again, and then it will turn itself on automatically. Iv'e tried pulling the plug and using a paper clip to press and hold the SYS-button on the back while putting in the power-cord , also while pressing the reset button and power button (needed some help with that). But nothing seems to happen.
Is there anyway to connect the 4 disks to a PC and somehow be able to access the data on the disks ? Maybe on A PC running Linux or Windows with a Linux based program to recover data ? I know it might be problematic because it's a hardware raid (internal controller on the NAS) and not a software raid.

The NAS actually uses software RAID.
If you can connect the four disks to a Windows PC, you can use ReclaiMe RAID recovery software ( https://www.reclaime.com/ ). You can download first, and confirm that the software can find your data volume before purchase.
You can also try to mount the array with linux - the system will need to have btrfs installed. There is some information on that here: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS-in-Business/Disk-volume-no-longer-active-force-activation/m-p/1553673#M144637
