ReadyNAS 214 - Volume data is syncing
What is this "volume data is syncing" process on newly formatted hard drives? and why is it stuck at 4.8%?
Scenario - new diskless ReadyNAS 214 with previously used drives; followed the procedure of factory reset for previously used drives; seemed to complete successfully. ReadyNAS 214 then tried to restart (auto, not me), reported a failure; tried to restart again (auto, not me), seemed to succeed, but now is doing this "volume data is syncing.....".
FYI, this ReadyNAS 214 is a replacement for a ReadyNAS NV2+ that died a few days ago (the hardware died; replacing the power supply did not revive the unit. The disks were fine. I was able to get the data off of the disks on that ReadyNAS NV2+ with reclaime.com software.
PS: the ReadyNAS 214 is on a LAN with no internet access; I'm using Raidar Utility 6.2 for configuration.

While it is bad form to reply to my own email:
1. I tried shutting down the ReadyNAS from RAIDar. The LED display said shutting down, but it kept grinding away.
2. I finally did the 3 taps on the power button to shut the ReadyNAS down, and it shut down.
3. On restarting, now all the admin widgets show up on RAIDar and I'm able to use the web-browser interface.
4. The syncing is proceeding, it is now at 14.36% complete and the progress is regularly updating (just now 14.45% complete).
5. On the Admin Page --> Performance, the fan was on quiet, and ReadyNAS was running hot - the CPU was at 65C, and the disks were at 50C. I've changed the fan setting to Balanced, and now the disks are at 41-44C and the CPU is at 60C. I'm thinking until all the set-up is complete, I should run the fan at Cool.
As I type this, syncing is 14.96% complete.

The resync of the volume is a normal operation when creating a couple of replacing a failed drive. If you want to read on the topic:

As jak0lantash says, the resync is normal. The operation can take quite a while (days) - it depends on the size and number of the disks.
What disks are you using?

That's reasonable. I'd switch it back to balanced when the balance is done.
