ReadyNAS 214 available on local network but will not connect to internet
Hi guys, I'm hoping someone can help point me in the right direction here. I have had my ReadyNAS 214 server for over a year now with no problems but last week I noticed I was unable to access it ac...

The link looks more like a quick start guide than a user manual. I do see more more info here: http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/content/167-port-forwarding-setting-up-port-forwarding-use-existing-set-up-custom-services.html
Anyway, you need set up an inbound service, not outbound. The remote web browser needs to connect to the NAS service, not the other way around. By default outbound connections are allowed.
I'd also forward both TCP and UDP (assuming there is a "both" option n the services screen).

Just wanted to note that this is still an issue for me - can you please confirm that the logs have been received?
Thanks

Hello michaelekins,
Perhaps send PM to mdgm to get his attention.

What apps do you have installed?
The system appears to be having some problems installing an update to a package.
- michaelekinsDec 17, 2016Aspirant
Thanks for the information. I have three apps installed: Plex, PlexPy and PHP.
I have been able to confirm that Plex and PlexPy are up to date and (with the exception of Plex not connecting to the internet) working fine. I have also been able to uninstall and reinstall them both.PHP seems to be the one potentially causing the problem - I cannot switch it off or uninstall it from the apps page.
It is listed as:
PHPDeveloper: Poussin
Version: 1.0.0
I don't know if there is update available and this is what is causing the problem you have seen? Is there a way to uninstall without using the remove button on the apps page?
Thanks again!

Hi michaelekins,
If you have a Linux background, you could remove it via SSH.
Doing this though would void your support warranty.

No. The hardware warranty isn't affected (after all, it covers hardware).
Software support could be, if the support engineer decides your use of ssh caused the problem. Even there, you have the option of doing a factory reset, and then support would is available again.
The policies are published here: http://kb.netgear.com/30068/ReadyNAS-OS-6-SSH-access-support-and-configuration-guides

Yes, that is what I meant. Thanks StephenB.
Edited my post to avoid confusion.

Thanks guys,
I attempted to remove the PHP app via SSH using the commandapt-get purge php.*
which looked to pass, but php5 and it's dependencies are still listed under dpkg -l ?
Additionally, it is still listed on the admin page.
Out of interest, I did also runapt-get -f install
and it seems the outstanding update is for perl-doc but it continues to fail when unpacking. Since I am not using perl, I opted to purge this also however it is failing.
I think I have some more information to dig into now which is great but still not resolved.
Thanks all - michaelekinsDec 18, 2016Aspirant
Ok, I have been able to resolve the issue! :):):)
The upgrade was failing as it could not replace "file.stub" with "file" - after deleting the stub file and doing the apt-get -f install again, everything works perfectly after a reboot of the server.Thank you to you all for your assistance, this was a strange issue for me and I wouldn't have got to the bottom of it without your help.
- michaelekinsDec 19, 2016Aspirant
Ok, bad news guys - after working for approximately 2 hours the issue is recurring again (Plex is unavailable outside the network).
Rebooting seems to bring it back on for an hour or so before it inevitably fails again.
This time, all apps are updated fully and I cannot identify any issues that way.
IPv6 is disabled and I have added the Google DNS address which is persisting correctly now.
Any other ideas?
Thanks

Are you checking this with a browser? If so, are you using plex.tv as the URL, or are you going directly to the NAS?
- michaelekinsDec 21, 2016Aspirant
StephenB: I typically launch the app directly from the NAS (ie: http://[NAS_name]:32400/web/index.html) but have tried via the plex.tv URL as well.
Both show "Not available outside your network" in the Settings > Server > Remote Access menuIt is via the browser in both instances - is there a way to check this not via the browser? If so, I have not tried this

The other way is via an app on a mobile device. It should give the same result (and I believe will connect through plex.tv).
Is the port forwarded in your router? Also, if there are two plex servers on your home network you will need to manually change one of the ports in the server configuration (and forward that port to the appropriate server).
- michaelekinsDec 21, 2016Aspirant
Ah yes, I have tried the mobile app also with the same results.
I do not use port forwarding and have not attempted to set this up as I do not have a static IP at home. Would be happy to give it a go if you think it will help though?
And I have only one Plex server on the network, ie. this NAS box.
Thanks - StephenBDec 21, 2016Guru - Experienced User
You should try port forwarding.
Begin by reserving an IP address for the NAS on your local network. This is possible with most routers (and Netgear routers call the feature "address reservation"). Sometimes other names are used (ARP binding being one). You'll need to know the mac address of the NAS to configure this - the router should be able to tell you this, you can also see it on the network page of the NAS web UI,
Then check the port value that plex is using. The Plex web ui will show it to you (server settings, on the remote access page). You forward that port in your router to the NAS IP address.
If you run into issues with the router settings, please provide the model information (a link to the router user manual would also be useful).

Thanks again,
I believe I have setup the port as you described but it hasn't worked. The link to the sky router manual is here: http://storage.sky.com/prod/helpcentre/manuals/skybroadband/MPM-UG00830BBSR101FSetUpGuideFibre_Final.pdf
I have:- Under Advanced>LAN IP Setup I have added address reservation for the NAS which I have confirmed with the device name and MAC address.
- Under Security>Services I have added a service named "Plex" of type TCP with ports 32400..32400 (TCP is recommended according to the plex forum here: https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiMkaqX1YXRAhXB2xoKHbCPAiEQFggeMAE&url=https%3A%2F%2Fsupport.plex.tv%2Fhc%2Fen-us%2Farticles%2F201543147-What-network-ports-do-I-need-to-allow-through-my-firewall-&usg=AFQjCNEOhE7qAD48cf7AIrvbX-LgOL1jmA&sig2=vZ61MyiOvWkZLSF-spaZrQ)
- Under Security>Firewall Rules I have added an Outbound service against the service "Plex" added from the previous step with settings Allow Always with LAN Users 192.168.0.19 which is the IP I reserved for the NAS in step 1.
After this, I logged into Plex and attempted to enable remote access which failed. I rebooted the NAS server and again, it came online for a time (1 hour and 20 mins-ish) before it was again not available outside the network.
The local IP of the NAS server did not change at any point (always 192.168.0.19 throughout). Is there anything I have done which is incorrect?
Thanks! - StephenBDec 21, 2016Guru - Experienced User

Sorry - of course it needs to be inbound! I'm not as clever as I thought lol.
Ok, so I have deleted the outbound service, changed the service to be TCP/UDP and re-created it as an inbound service to the IP reserved for the NAS server. Then manually specifying the port in Plex to be the one I set on the service and re-enabling it has worked!!
It has been up and running for close to 3 hours now so I am hopeful this is now resolved.
If it is still up and running in the morning then I will mark your post as the answer and close this.
Thank you to you all for your help with this - what a fantastic community NetGear has!Cheers
