Hi Folks, 1) I have a ReadyNas 214. 2) I decided to swap a hd with a ssd (wish I never started this) 3) Powered down, swapped disk and waited. 4) Could not see the ReadyNas 5) Reinstalled OS,...

You need to sort out what is wrong with the volume, and then mount it.

3) HD was 1TB, SSD 4TB. I wasn't concerned (perhaps I should have been). My aim was for it to resync (what ever size it uses the ssd as eg 1tb). Then copy the data to a couple of spare 1TB. Wipe the readynas clean, reinstall/ format readynas disks then copy the original data from the 1TB spares. (There probably is a more efficient way of doing this but I thought this would at least worked)
Would have been better to copy off the data to the data first first.

2) Have had a look at the logs - didn't help me much (probably because I didn't understand them). Just tried to look at them again alas I cant even get into the readynas now. (Will try rebooting/ reinstall os)
Did you download the log zip file?
If you have that, you can send me a download link via PM (private message) using the envelope icon in the upper right of the forum page. Make sure the permissions allow anyone with the link to download.

This bit is because you are logging in as admin, when you should be logging in as root (using the NAS admin password).

Have you looked at the full log zip to figure out why the volume isn't mounting?

Was the SSD the same size (or larger) as the HD?

If the numbers represent sizes then not sure they are what I am looking for. But if the directories are what I need eg 'data' 'media' how do I get to them?

Actually, not as helpful as you likely think. data is a different BTRF volume than root, and the "directory" you are seeing there is just a pointer to a (probably inaccessible) data volume.
You may have had a second drive fail during the RAID re-sync, though your timeline doesn't seem to leave time for that. Is it possible you already had one failed drive? StephenB can take a look at your logs and figure that out.
I hope you've not yet done anything with the drive you removed, as it may be key in recovering your data.

I learnt a lot from Stephen and he provided a review of my logs.
In the end I was able to recover some critical data from a USB attached to the ReadyNas.
A few points:
1) Don't mess with SSH, if you don't know what you're doing.
2) This is obvious but I never used to do this - eject USBs properly via the operating system.
3) Perhaps redundant - but not a bad idea to backup backup.
4) When you buy a new SSD there is data on there which shows how many hours it has been active.
5) Personally I think, if you do not have too much critical data - may be just easier to use one of the cloud backup services (IMHO), especially if you are not a network specialist.
Again much kudos to StephenB
