The file search option on the NAS is for searching via the NAS web ui - it has nothing to do with file searching with Finder or Windows Explorer.

netgear's 6.8 file search states:
"If you use macOS, File Search integrates with Spotlight on SMB and AFP connections to ReadyNAS shares. If your share is set to be indexed and is mounted on your macOS, Spotlight will not have to use additional resources to scan the share. NETGEAR recommends using SMB instead of AFP and enabling ."

I'm not sure why someone who doesn't have MacOS and isn't familiar with the issue would offer an opinion, but whatever.
I had this same problem, as described in this post: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS/File-search-on-ReadyNAS-6-9-1-doesn-t-allow-searching-home/td-p/1489509. If you're trying to use Spotlight to search your home directory on the ReadyNAS, it won't work (at least not currently). I think this is a bug, but Netgear calls this "expected behavior." The response I got was that because it's a private directory, it won't be searchable. This could certainly be improved upon.
