ReadyNAS 314 - Rsync Backup, advice please
I’ve created a backup on my ReadyNAS 314, as per the following settings:
General: Name: Backup
Source: Type: volume
Source: Name: volume: data
Destination: Type: usb
Destination: Name: External Storage (USB Back Top)
Destination: Auto eject device when the job is done: Ticked
Options: Schedule full backup: first time
Options: On completion send: full backup logs
Note: Using a Seagate Backup Plus 2TB external drive, formatted with NTFS.
This works, however my NAS currently has 476GB of data, yet there was 760GB of data copied to the USB drive! Upon further inspection, I found the following addition folders:
._share [seems to be the snapshot files]
.apps [apps installation folder]
.purge [empty folder]
.vault [empty folder]
I don’t want to back-up the snapshots, and I assume the 3 other hidden folders (as I only want the data). I also need the backup to be a “mirror”; so after searching through the forums it seems I need to do a rsync backup – but I’m not 100% about the settings.
I am configuring the rsync backup as below, and the questions I have are highlighted:
General: Name: rsync Backup
Source: Type: volume
Source: Name: volume: data
Destination: Type: usb
Destination: Name: remote: Rsync Server
Destination: Host: Should this be 127.0.0.1, the ReadyNAS server name, or the ReadyNAS IP address?
Destination: Path: USB_HDD_1
Destination: Login: Do I need this?
Destination: Password: Do I need this?
Advanced: Remove deleted files on source: If I tick this, does it mean it will delete files from the USB which have been deleted from the NAS (source), I don’t want files deleted from the NAS?
Advanced: Files & Folders to be excluded: ._share .apps .purge .vault (I assume that’s all I need to do to exclude them, or do I need to do ._share/*.* etc?)
Options: Schedule full backup: first time
Options: On completion send: full backup logs
I notice there is no option now for “Auto eject device when the job is done”, how do I safely unmount/remove the USB drive?
Any help/advice?

- vandermerweMasterYou need to enable rsync for the USB disk.
Use the IP address of the NAS, not the name.
You don't need the login details.
Remove deleted files on source will remove files on the backup ( destination) that are no longer on the source ( your NAS). It will not delete anything from the NAS.
Exclude folders will exclude all folders you list, separated by commas. There is a particular syntax for entering folder names with spaces. My advice would be to setup separate rsync backup jobs for each share that you have and exclude snapshot folders. Much more versatile than rsync of a whole volume.
I don't think you can automatically unmount the USB drive at present, you'll need to do it manually using the GUI. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf you use a separate backup job for each share, there is no need to exclude the snapshot folder - since it is not stored in the share.
- vandermerweMasterMine do appear as a folder within the share, and I need to exclude them from the rsync backup of the share.

On mine, the snapshots for SHARE show up in /data/._share/SHARE/.snapshotsvandermerwe wrote: Mine do appear as a folder within the share, and I need to exclude them from the rsync backup of the share.
That of course is not in the share at all.
What path are you seeing them in? - HazimilAspirant

How do I do this?
Thanks for all your help.
Jonathan - HazimilAspirantAll sorted and working. Thanks for your help, just one query left, which I create another thread for.

Just realized you must have "allow snapshot access" checked. I don't.vandermerwe wrote: Mine do appear as a folder within the share, and I need to exclude them from the rsync backup of the share. - vandermerweMasterThat's it, I do.
