Thanks for your rapid and helpful reply Sandshark.  I had used this same USB key to perform a full USB recovery on yet another ReadyNAS 314 some time ago.  This was with I think firmware 6.7.2 or thereabouts when that was current.  Having established that it worked then, I labelled and stored the USB key since I knew that not all keys would function for USB recovery.  Before I tried to use it this time I used the Windows USB Recovery tool and firmware 6.10.5 to reformat and update it.  I'm fairly sure I did this correctly, but I'll retry USB recovery with a selection of keys from my desk drawer.  It's always possible that the stored key I tried is itself failing.

 

If it should turn out that the internal flash is faulty is there anything else I can attempt?

If the flash is bad, there is nothing you can do about it, unfortunately.
