If you are uploading to a NAS on the same LAN it would be using the LAN connection.
Perhaps try turning off IPv6 on the NAS. There may be other settings you could change that would help.
Which firmware are you running?

So just to confirm, when I am at home files will always be transfered from my PC to NAS via the ethernet LAN connection, regardless of whether I transfer the file via the Network Location in Windows or via the NAS Admin page (accessed using my internet browser)?
If so, do you know why it is faster for me to trasnfer the file using the NAS Admin page than it is using Network Place in Windows (i.e. copy and paste from PC location to Network location)?
I have disabled the IPv6 on the NAS as suggested so will see what imapct that has.
Im running the latest firmware I believe (6.5.1) and am using Windows XP with a Gigbit ethernet connection to a Gigabit Switch into a Virgin Media 3 SuperHub router/Modem.
So far it has taken about 5 minutes to upload a 5.6GB DVD ISO file from PC to NAS using the NAS Admin page but almost 7 or 8 minutes when copying and pasting to the Network Location.

It might be because the Windows OS is outdated - forcing the NAS to use SMB1.
Can you confirm that your PC is actually negotiating gigabit? You should be able to see that in the router admin ui.

Sorry not sure what you mean by SMB1?
When I check the Status of my LAN connection in Network Connections it shows 1.0Gbps against Speed.
Are you able to confirm the answer to my question about whether uploading files from PC to the NAS via the NAS Admin page in the Internet Browser sends the file via the internet or via the LAN?

Windows XP is End of Life. So you really shouldn't be using that anymore as it isn't getting any more security updates.
You could try installing the SMB Plus app and changing the SMB level to SMB1 which is what XP used.
SMB is the Sever Message Block Protocol. SMB1 is SMB version 1. Newer versions of Windows use newer versions of this protocol.Using the web admin page the file transfer would happen over your LAN.
