ReadyNAS DUO - Files disappeared, video only

I've been using this DUO for many years just for simple NAS with no problems, X-RAID (Expandable RAID), 2 disks, Redundant.

I have Shares set as Backup and Media..

In Media I have five folders, one of them is VIDEO, with 5 sub folders, each of them 5-15 sub folders again with tens and hundreds of video files each.

These subfolders were accesed on daily bases for watching, changing and adding videos until one day BANG, without any visible reason all video files from VIDEO folder dissapeared (my guess is - arround 1TB). The only thing still there are a FEW empty folders and subfolders.

Please note:

-there are other video files outside the VIDEO folder in both shares(Backup and Media) untouched. Also all other files and folders (hundreds of folders, thousands of files) untouched.

-Few weeks ago I got an email warning that:

  Volume C is approaching capacity:
80% used, 280G available. (Since then I have added some files, less than 40GB(guess).

-NOW in Volumes, Volume C says Disk space 286GB(20%) of 1389GB used.

- I can confirm this in Windows 10- Size= ~ 290GB.

- It is impossible (very, very unlikely at least) that someone accidently deleted those files. Proof of that is that there are some folders and subfolders left but empty!

- Virus? My Norton says everything OK,

Any ideas??

I don't know what happened, but I do know that if data is written to the NAS then recovery becomes more problematic.

So I do suggest that you not write anything else to the C volume.

Netgear support offers data recovery.  Some users have also had good luck with ReclaiMe.

I cant get anything from Netgear suport re data recovery, I guess as this DUO is 7 years old.

I will have to try the ReclaiMe.

I would realy like to find out what happened.

        Hello lipmil,

I checked your profile and found that your ReadyNAS Duo is registered but it no longer has warranty. However, you can still purchase data recovery support contract from support team, I believe you may also need to purchase a per incident support first. Please see this article: NETGEAR Support ReadyNAS: Data Recovery Diagnostics - Scope of Service
