ReadyNas Duo just sort of died...

Hi, purchased this (Netgear RND2000 v2 ReadyNAS Duo from eBuyer) NAS last week and set it up without much issue. It's ran ok since, every now and then dropping off connection via its name on my windows machine. Connecting via IP was fine so I switched to that the few times its happened. Was gonna get around to fixing it at some point, no biggie.

But now it has just stopped. Died late last night before I went to bed, but my sister said it was fine during the day today. I'd just got home, was half way through a TV episode I was streaming and the NAS stopped sharing. Just cut off. I can connect using firefox to the device and play with settings, turn stuff on and off like SMB and tried altering the name/workgroup and back again. It's there, but not. Windows gets and unknown error connecting to the IP while I'm actively updating it with firefox on the same machine. When I was streaming I was using NFS so it seems to be all sharing, not just samba.

Logs show no errors, but under settings for Remote Access it shows No Connection (two red crosses). I just turned it off for ten minutes which has fixed that (a plain reboot didn't), but still no shares. The Remote Access windows app keeps randomly asking me to reconnect, sometimes going away for a while, not sure what that's about.

RAIDar can see it fine, but no joy connecting. Says when I try to update it that I already have the latest software (5.3.7).

Any suggestions appreciated?

If you purchased new, then you are entitled to 90 phone support.

However, the warranty is not transferable, so if you purchased it used, there is none.

Remote Access (e.g., ReadyNAS Remote) wouldn't be used for NFS or SAMBA sharing, though of course the errors could be a sign of something more basic is broken. Did you set up a ReadyNAS remote account?

One pretty safe option is to try an OS reinstall from the boot menu. That will reset the admin password, and the IP stack to use DHCP, but should preserve all other settings and your data. The hardware manual has the details (http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ ... Mar-12.pdf). Also, its always a good idea to look at the disk SMART stats if there is something odd going on.
