Readynas duo locked hard drives - SOLVED
Hi there this is my first post so forgive me if its not in the right section.
I have recently purchased a readynas duo v2. The problem i am having is the unit boots and factory defaults on every restart. I can confirm its not the unit as i have replaced it so have concluded that its the hard drives. I believe they are locked, not visible in windows (even in disk management). I think the problem occurred during a secure erase of the drives and mistakenly thought the erase had finished because the RNas was not visible in raidar. The unit was still on, so i powered it off. Can someone confirm weather or not the unit is mean't to disappear from raidar during this process and would doing another secure erase of the hard drives resolve this issue? Also is it correct that the RNas will auto shutdown on erase completion.
Regards T

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAnother secure erase (this time one that completes) would resolve the issue. Alternatively a L3 tech could use hdparm to unlock the drives easily using the commands found here: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=380555#p380555
- TbagAspirantI will wait for the erase to complete this time and report back. Thank you.
- TbagAspirantSo the erase didnt finish and was advised by netgear to turn it off. now have the drives running in ubuntu and have the hdparm commands but im told the password is incorrect
tom@Ison:~$ hdparm --security-unlock NETGEAR /dev/sdj
security_password="NETGEAR"
/dev/sdj: Permission denied - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThat output doesn't suggest the password is incorrect. It suggests you don't have sufficient privileges to run the command.
Try putting "sudo" (no quotes) before hdparm i.e. do sudo hdparm ... - TbagAspirantYou were correct. Im a linux noob ....
Thank you so much for the support +1
How do i mark this as solved/closed - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou could edit the thread title (I.e. the first post in the thread) to mention that it is solved/closed.
